Hello,

I am looking at a cheap 4K monitor primarily for productivity. One model available close to me is U28R55, with spec sheet found here:
https://downloadcenter.samsung.com/content/UM/202004/20200424093114575/BN46-01082A-Eng.pdf

When trying to find reviews online I found one person couldn't get it to work 4K@60 over HDMI, instead only 30Hz. That's why I was looking at a spec. On page 45 there is mention of "CEA, 3840 x 2160 [...] 60Hz", while others are marked VESA.

My question is: Does CEA mean interlaced, and does this mean the monitor will support 4K@60Hz over HDMI or only 4K@30 in Windows? This is important because I plan to use it with a laptop which has only HDMI out.

Thanks in advance.

You just need an output and a monitor that has at least DP 1.2 or HDMI 2.0 to run 4K@60.

I can't see what version the HDMI is on the U28R55 so it might be HDMI 1.4 which would limit to 4K@30. Using the Display Port 1.2 should run 4K@60 no problem.

Just saw you are using a laptop with only HDMI. You will need to figure out if the laptop HDMI is 2.0 first, then make sure you get a 4K screen with HDMI 2.0.

If your laptop is only HDMI 1.4 max you will get out of it is 4K@30. If it has a USB C port that supports DP you might be able to use an adapter, that is what I do with my work laptop.

Thank you very much, that's what I needed to know. I kept the spec ref of the laptop which says "1x HDMI® 2.0 ... 1x USB-C 3.2 Gen 1 (support data transfer and DisplayPort™ 1.2)", which is good news. In the meantime I found some people confirming they can do 4K@60 with almost the same model (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RXWVXc5mnek). I am still confused about the CEA thing in the spec, and why they just didn't put in VESA.
