Hi all,

I have decided to surprise my lovely Mum with a new TV as a present. Her current one is 32" Samsung UE32H4510AK (manufactured 2014 and think she got it a couple of years later) and I am going to look at a 37".

It doesn't need to be fancy at all and I can see a few 'cheaper' brands available from high street stores - these would definitely be an easy upgrade surely?

I would be looking to spend £250 max so thinking one of these could be a good option.

Anything to look out for compared with saying, spending another £100 on a 'recognisable' brand? Are JVC and Toshiba ok as well?

Thanks.

No. They are re-badged Vestel Tellies. Said brand of Telly is cheap but not cheerful. After a few years they break (Mostly) when they do too expensive to repair or parts no longer available. Check the telly box before buying regardless of make, if it says 'made in Turkey' = Vestel. Even the cheaper Panasonics are Vestel. New 37" tellies are hard to find these days, its not cost effective to make them when 43" can be made for almost the same price. I ended up buying an LG 43" telly earlier in the year for the same price I paid for my old Panasonic 32" 10 years ago.

Ah.

Ok so which brands should i stick to but on a budget? :)

It's not a question of what to buy but where to buy a telly these days. Currys & Argos sell a lot of tellies, Argos AFAIK is the UK's largest bricks & mortar telly retailer, I wouldn't buy from them as most of the tellies they push come from Turkey, A similar situation with Currys too from what I understand. Richer Sounds & John Lewis are the best bricks & mortar places to buy from, 5 & 6 year Guarantees on any of their tellies. I bought mine from the latter as I did the last one 10 years ago.
