I have just purchased this mp3 player, and i plug it into the computer and go to install the drivers. But it tells me that I have to have windows xp to be able to use this MP3 player. I was wondering is there any way i can use it on Windows 2000?

You basically need to get the player into UMS mode, which nearly all Sammy players are able to do (with a bit of messing). Sometimes it's enabled in the menu options, sometimes by holding certain buttons while plugging it in, and some have it enabled in certain firmware versions depending on the country of origin which you can flash to.

I'll let you research what it is on the K3.

Another question. Ive tried to upgrade the firmware. But when i go to upgrade it, it just tells me to plug in the device, but the device is plugged in? Or do i need to put it into UMS mode before i can even upgrade the firmware?

You'll need to find a winXP/vista machine to upgrade via MTP, but once UMS is active it should work on any operating system.
