When I bought my Speakers the bloke in the shop said you can put sand in them.. There's a little plastic cap that comes off at the bottom/back of each speaker..

I've had them about a year now so dont mind experimenting a bit :D

I've never heard of this before, What does it achieve? Is it worth it? If so, Which sand do you use?

Speakers are these and this amp.

As far as I can see it just gives them added stability I would be suprised if it affected the sound.
Do you get close to knocking them over?
If not I would not bother.

The technical aspect is to stop any internal resonance inside the hollow speaker cab - it is supposed to improve the sound - I would definately give it a go.

Instructions I have read - dont just fill it up - keep topping up until it sounds best

I couldnt be bothered - just filled 3/4's :) - that is speaker stands - not like this

Yeah i've done this with my speaker stands for 2 reasons.
To make them heavier so people are less likely to knock them over.
To help with isolation.

If you are going to use sand, fake volcanic rock or lead pellets, then a good tip is to bag it.

Loose sand isn't something you want in the bottom of your speakers if you come to move them in the future. Bagging also makes it easier and tidier to remove a bit if you need to adjust the load, and it slows down the absorption of atmospheric moisture.

I would hazard a guess - that adding sand to the speaker is the same as adding sand to a dedicated speaker stand that a book shelf speaker will typically go on.

You want kiln dried sand - not babys play sand as it got a lot of moisture in it
Its cheap - or if you want to go a bit crazy you can add these

lol
Silver metal flakes have been added to give maximum visual presence

so to make it look good! Audio enthusiasts will buy anything if you add some psuedo science to it, even a 30 quid tub of sand!

When I worked at Celestion we provided bags which were to be fit into the stands and then filled with sand. I wouldn't be keen on loose sand in the speakers though, bagging it is a much better idea.
