why are they so cheap? Are they using cheaper memory or something that the equivilent vertex etc? Im tempted but would like to know why they are cheaper before I purchased one

This is Sandisk, one of the most premium brands of NAND there is, they are anything but cheap. :)

Are the details on that last one correct? Lower max write speed, but disproportionately higher cost per GB and almost half the max IOPS?

I realise prices are usually not linear towards the top end as they cram in more to the same space or have lower yields of the top spec products, but seems to be a couple of oddities as usually the bigger drives have had better performance in the same ranges.

M4 beaters? Who's knows... Certainly an Vertex capable drive, maybe even an Intel 520 capable drive.

Reason for being so cheap? They own 60% of the NAND than is produced in the world (or so was claimed during our meeting) hence the lower price.

Im very excited to see if sandisk have pulled this off as the price/performance leader as this so far looks to be VERY promising.

Scavenged around for my own answers.

What the stats up top don't indicate is that all max IOPS ratings are for the writes, when it comes to reads, they do indeed increase as the disk size increases (23k, 39k, 44k). The drop in max IOPS and write speeds is corroborated by SanDisk's own published stats, the price however is more realistically scaled on their site too (i.e. should be less than double the 240GB model):

The disassembly here (link below) maybe helps indicate why the 480GB drops where it does - if it has to utilise all 16 NAND spots on the board (which is probable, the 240GB one is occupying half of them), it places half of the chips further away from the controller and some other gubbins (tech term!) than they would be for either of the other models, and I guess that increased distance leads to a potential drop in raw oomph.

It fairs impressively well with the 4k reads and the 480's higher max read IOPS may even make that better still, but otherwise the 240GB one as seemingly reviewed everywhere is a highly commendable unit.
