Been looking at getting a 2500k assuming the price is going to be around £170.

Before I hit the "buy" button in January, is anyone able to say which AMD processor would be the equivalent of the 2500k? I am also assuming, as is suggested by some reports, that the 2500k may be roughly 15 to 20 percent faster than the Intel I5 760.

Amd or intel. Which will offer best value? Anyone able to speculate?

Thanks.

The X4 955/965 I believe. The i5 760 already performs better than both of these so I would assume the sandy bridge 2500/k will be even better.

I would wait for the 2500k which is what I am doing :)

Well there is nothing from AMD that will be able to compete with it on performance, but there are processors available that may be better value for money from AMD.

Depends on what your main usage is for a computer and whether you actually need the highest processor performance. For general use and gaming any decent processor from AMD or Intel will do the job.

have look in Wikipeida site and see the difference between Intel and AMD as AMD still much cheaper for 6 core - Intel still using 2 or 4 core and few are 6 core with so expensive price - save yer money by buy cheaper rather than blow yer big cash away. If I were you i would buy cheaper to save some money for future like retire,etc.. I used AMD X6 1100T with a week offer that was much cheaper for 6 core.. If you rich then that up to you to spend with big wallet.. remember new CPU dont take longer as it usual every 2-3 years with new codename like Haswell that will replace Sandybridge in few years.

The Phenom II X4 965/970 etc. would be the competitors for the 2500K, but none of AMD's quads would compete with it, and their X6 CPUs would only be better in encoding type applications.

I would say wait until maybe March when Sandy Bridge has been released for a little while and people have had experience with them and how they compare to AMD systems. Then it will be easier to make the decision.

even as an AMD fanboy, i would say at the price the 2500k will be much better value than the current phenom lineup (assuming that is the price it comes out at). However, to redeem myself, it also depends on how much a p67/h67 motherboard will cost as well. AM3 boards can be had from as little as £30, with the latest 800 chipsets starting at £70. I dont really know if the intel boards will be priced to compete or have a huge early adopters fee.

Well the dilemma is simple.

  • Buy sandybridge when it comes out.
  • Wait till AMD Bulldozer comes out and make the better choice for price/performance whether its AMD or Intel's offerings.

The problem with AMD's current lineup is that many people are assuming that just because you can get an AMD 6-core for £200 or so it's better than any Intel chip available, and better than Intel's six cores. Unfortunately, the weakness of the architecture are still there and the AMD hexcore designs only pull ahead of Intel's quad core chips in heavily threaded applications; the kind most home users won't even use. A hex core for gaming is a total waste; better off getting a faster Intel quad core chip for the same money.
