I want to build a new PC and was looking to get a decent i7, but Sandy Bridge seems to be the way forward

This has proberbly been asked but, whats the difference and will Sandy Bridge be worth the extra cost(assuming it'll cost more overall)

The i5 2500k is the best one to go forif you want to OC. Better performance, lower power usage, better overclocking etc.

I'm building a new rig and that's the one I'm going for.

if you already got an I7 920 as in your sig, upgrading to sandy would be a waste of money imo.

It was for another pc and then was going to make the one in my sig my LAN machine as i assumed it'd be inferior to a sandy bridge chip

oh right. well as you say, sandy does appear to be the way many upgraders are going right now. so if you have money to spare I don't see why not.

If you are building a new system, the Sandy Bridge CPUs are the way to go. They are more energy efficient, require cheaper memory (only dual channel) and can reach higher clocks if you go for the 'K' parts. The 2500K at only £185 will outperform the £220 950.

However, as a upgrade to a 920 it doesn't make any sense. The 920 can easily be overclocked to 3.8-4.0GHz. A Sandy Bridge system will only give you 10-15% extra real life performance, so the £400+ outlay would not be value for money...

Keep your I7 920 and save some money for the new Socket 2011 due by Q3 2011 that would be good one than SB 1155.. dont waste money to spend too quickly after SB released - always wait until few months cos it too early with new boards,etc.. by few months it will be new model of motherboard,etc.. - best to wait until in the Autumn - i would wait for AMD AM4 to save my money as Im not buy Bulldozer AM3+ --- Im keep my AM3 X6 1100T just now until 2012-2014..
