Common sense says stick where I am, what do you guys think? See sig for rig

Will we see 980 derivatives or is that a dead end?

I'm staying put. I mainly use my pc for gaming now and there's no gain moving to these mainstream sb parts for that. Might give the 2011 socket a look though.

Agreed with all, pointless changing if you already own a current I5/I7..

Only time i will even consider it is with Ivy Bridge which is a good few years off yet, even then i may skip that as well.

I am on Core 2 Quad Q6600 and will be using it for a good 4 years atleast:). Lol back to bald emoticons and they look even more sweet and cute:p.

Could always get an extra computer running sandy bridge, and keep the x58 one. Mini-itx sandy bridge, stack of hard drives and you've got the makings of a very good NAS/HTPC

Ill stick with what i have for the time being, saying that though i could consider an upgrade later in the year when the i7 replacements arrive. Id probably keep the parts of this rig though to replace my ancient a64 s939 4000 second rig.

I dunno - a 35W 2.5GHz Dual core SB with onboard graphics (like the i3 2100T) sounds like a decent bit of kit for a HTPC/NAS. It will be a nippy CPU and the onboard GPU can handle 1080p fine.

I was thinking of doing exactly that. if the current i3's can do it fine these should be excellent.

Just wish OcUK get them in, they weren't added in today :(

Sorry for hijacking but could the same be said for a Intel Core 2 6600 oc'd to 2.8 with a 5700 GC? I know there will be a large jump in performance but worth the £350+ for the parts?

Cheers.

I believe these lower-end SB CPUs will be out in mid-late February.

Is that a Q6600 or E6600?

Also, which 5700 series card - 5770 or 5750?

With an I7, or an I5 rig currently, I personally wouldn't upgrade. Unless you can get a really good price for your current gear, it's not really worth it.

I think its the E6600 dual core and the GC is a 5770.

Fair enuf.

That system should play modern games OK, only a small few (like BF:BC2 and Civ 5) really need the extra CPU power to play.

As for whether it is worth the £350+ to upgrade - it really depends on how you feel your rig is handling your games. If you are happy with it - then you may as well wait, no point upgrading unless you feel the need.

However, if you feel you need the extra power then I would strongly suggest looking at the new i5 2500K - it is a beast of a chip and will provide a large performance boost over your current CPU. Also, if you pick up a P67 board with "proper" x8x8 CrossfireX then you could buy a second 5770 and boost your framerates for not too much money.
