Hi, need some help. Building two computers for my friends. The original plan was to build them with Ivy bridge however I have heard that they run very hot.
Computer 1 is to have a 680 gtx with the i7 3770K
Computer 2 is to have 2 x 6870 with the i5 3570K
I wanted both machines to be up to date with the newest components so upgrading would be relatively cheap.

You haven't said whether you intend to overclock them or what cooling you'll be using, but bear in mind IB only runs hot when you run a lot of volts through it, at stock, or a moderate overclock (4.4Ghz for e.g) you'll be fine. Clock for clock IB faster than SB, a 4.4Ghz IB is supposed to equate to a 4.6Ghz SB clock, it's more power efficient and has a better memory controller.

New build, IB all the way IMO.

Definitely go for ivy bridge, I have mine running at 4.2 with 1.15 volts (can probably do it with less volts than that, was just being extra safe :p) and it never touches 70 degrees, and no water cooling or massive noctua heatsink or anything like that. And to put the temps in perspective I asked intel tech support on their live chat service what the 24/7 safe running temperature is and they said 75 degrees. So basically if you find a clock/volt combo that gets it to 75 degrees, and no higher, you could run that at full load constantly :D
