Hi all, I'm probably going to look really stupid asking this question but im a little puzzled and always want to learn more.

Basically I have a Dell XPS laptop running a i5 560m Socket 988. I noticed looking around the web there are new sandybridge processors also using the same socket 988. I just wondered does that mean you could upgrade a 1st gen to the sandybridge by simply slotting it in the current socket or am I completely going up the creek without a paddle.

I'm not bothered about upgrading personally as the laptop does more than I need just one thing that puzzled me today on my daily tour of the web.

I'm not so clued in to the mobile variants of Sandybridge CPUs, but you'll need a motherboard with a cougar point chipset to run a sandybridge CPU. So even if your MB has the same socket (which I doubt) I'm almost certain a SB CPU wouldn't work.

Hiya Dave, yeh I thought the chipset might be different. The socket is the same thats what puzzled me.

Thanks for the input :)
