SandyBridge-E (LGA2011) and X79

The 2600k still keeping up with them and in many beating the SB-E chips. The one thing that those benches do show is how far behind intel AMD are. BD really needs to be something spectacular.

interesting, but it wont really affect me, these are going to be the stupidly expensive chips

Only expensive if you go for the X (Extreme) models. I can't remember the 920 being expensive..

The “X” at the end of -3960X represents Intel’s Extreme Edition family—a designation generally reserved for one SKU at any given time at the top of the desktop stack. The “K” at the end of -3930K denotes lower-end, but still multiplier-unlocked models, also geared to enthusiasts.

Regardless of which, IvyBridge on LGA2011 should bring the real reason to upgrade from LGA1366.

Not a relevant purchase for 90% of games players.

I'm not a gamer :] Photoshop filters running 3x faster than an AMD hex is definitely of interest (since I currently have an AMD quad, thus implying a 4-4.5x speed increase...)

Frankly I'll be happy if the 2600K/2700K drops below £200 :P

Regardless of which, IvyBridge on LGA2011 should bring the real reason to upgrade from LGA1366.

Why do you think that?

All of Ivy's known improvements are to the integrated GPU which isn't even present on LGA2011 chips.

I don't think Intel have confirmed there will be an Ivy Bridge-E? Seems logical to believe that there would be, but then again if it is as delayed as SB-E has been and Haswell is on time then it might be obsolete a few months after it's released...

Strange how Intel have a new chip and socket ready for demonstration when they do not really need one, but AMD who are in desperate need of a new product still have nothing.

I wonder whether AMD will be pulling rabbits or lemons out of the hat come Bulldozer time.

But for anything else its still streets behind, the tests show the top chip from each socket (1155/2011/1366/AM3+) which in most cases are aimed at more than gamers, the SB-E chips essentially being rebadged xeons proves this further.

I'll say it again, BD really needs to be something special, they at least need a good solid quad to compete in the gaming market against the 2500k.
