Sanity Check - Dead 3600X

Hi all,

TLDR;

PC will not turn on with 3600x in Asus x470 itx mobo
-Worked prior so changing the fan on cryorig c7g and re-pasting the CPU
-Shortly after it began taking ages to boot
-no visible damage or thermal paste on socket or pins
-Latest bios on motherboard
-Motherboard RGB works
-System powers on and boots if I insert a R5 1700
-Tired the CPU in another known working system and get the same behavior.

Is it RMA time or is there anything missing?

Looks like this one's off to silicon heaven with all the calculators but I wanted to make sure I haven't missed anything.

Appreciate the input, like the topic says it's more a sanity check than anything. I'm going to give it one more shot tonight but if not ill have to send it off.

Hopefully AMD warranty process is speedy.

Tried reseating your ram or just one ram stick installed? Sometimes disturbing the cpu can affect your memory sticks

It was late last night when I gave up I couldn't see anything wrong with the CPU, I'll double check tonight.
The 1700 works with my x470 board and ram the 3600 does not.
Similarly the 3600 does not work in the system with a b450 and different ram that the 1700 came from

That might be due to an out of date bios (its required to update for the 3xxx series to work in older boards).

Both systems have the most recent bios, the systems will not even power on if the 3600 is in either system, I have tried the switches and jumping the motherboard pins. Both systems power on fine when the 1700 is in.

I've never had a CPU die on me before, so I am just making sure I explore all avenues before I RMA the thing. I also forgot to mention I have a 3rd board a b450 Tomahawk (non max & latest bios) that does power on but immediately hits the CPU debug light. This board hated the 3600x from the start and would regularly refuse to boot. That's part of the reason I have the X470.

You had a dead Vega 64 at the start of the year I believe yes?
What's your PSU? Did you had the X470 board when your Vega 64 got killed?

Thanks for remembering me haha, this is a completely new system to the Vega 64. This issue with that was just I was completely unable to get any stable undervolt at all.

I never did get that sorted but I've now given up and got a 5700xt which I'm very happy with.

It's happened to me twice in 25 years. Along with the 2.4 PIV and 450 PIII i've seen 2 of my own and a few friends Northwoods die of 'SNDS' sudden northwood death syndrome. Both of mine were overclocked and can't fault them for that but i know of 3 that were not but gradually degraded to the point of being so unstable even underclocking them didn't help. ESD can kill a cpu and i've seen a few over the years where the client took out the cpu to clean it etc.. and it never worked again, no physical damage and the boards worked fine with replacement chips. I remember once i got an Athlon XP 1800+ that didn't post in about 5 boards i tried it in, set up an RMA and the night before as i was packaging it i decided to give it one more go and lo and behold it worked, and worked for about 7 years in an office machine after that! in one of the boards it failed to post in.

Some form of ESD or silicon fault is all I can put it down to. I got the CPU from someone who tried mining with it for some reason. So who knows what may have been tried.

Just wanted to say the thanks to everyone in the thread. The CPU has gone off to AMD today.

Decided to buy a replacement and then I'll sell the RMA return on after Christmas. Pc is up and working fine now now.
