Hey guys,

Almost time to order, how does this look for a build? Any and all comments/suggestions appreciated. This is intended to be a pretty reasonable X99 entry system but without bankrupting me completely... System will be used for gaming but also a lot of video editing, encoding etc. and also some 3d modelling type stuff...

(INB4 wait for Broadwell-E - I'm confident it won't be *that* big of a performance boost, and I need the system now)...

(Also INB4 no GPU, wtf it won't work? I've got a GPU, case and PSU already so no worries!)

My basket at Overclockers UK:

Total: £783.05
(includes shipping: £11.10)

Go for the Gigabyte SOC board instead, the rest looks good.

But it's so ugly!!! :p

Seriously though if it's features are worth it I'd consider it (my case doesn't have a window either so no big deal what it looks like). I was originally going to go for the ~£180 Gigabyte boards or the MSI one to save a few pennies as I've always found I don't need a lot of the "premium" features (for example on my current system I specifically went for the Gigabyte D3H because it didn't have SLi support - as I knew I'd never get 2 GPUs)

Saw a review HERE of that cooler and it mentions low profile ram - also doesn't seem to be great at cooling their over clocked 5820k - admittedly at 1.344v

Hmm, good spot... any recommendations on a decent cooler which ought to clear the RAM? Not bothered about those AIO liquid coolers really as unless I'm very much mistaken they (the lower end ones at least) aren't that much better than a decent Air cooler...

Was also pondering going for 32 instead of 16Gb for the ram (the £149.99 Corsair venegance, or maybe the Kingston Fury sticks which are a little bit less)

Kingston Fury Ram is cheaper. If you want 32GB then there is a kit for £116.99.

Noctua D15S won't interfere with the Ram, and it also clears the top pci-e slot due to the offset design.

Hmm having said that the 32Gb Corsair ram for £149.99 is 2666MHz... though with these new ludicrous-speeds I'm a little unsure what speeds are "worth it" (my previous 16Gb of XMS3 DDR3 sticks were only 1600MHz so this all seems crazy fast at this point)...

What about the Be Quiet Dark Rock 3? I just checked and my current machine has the Dark Rock 2 which I was pretty pleased with (and seems okay for RAM clearance)

I found the Noctua mounting system to be very user-friendly and easy to fit.

Are you going to be overclocking or not? You probably won't notice much difference between 2666MHz and 3000MHz RAM.

The Noctua mentioned above does seem to review very well :) And it looks like it's been improved so as not to foul the 1st PCI-E slot which was an issue with a few coolers on X99 boards.

As far as ram goes - my opinion is, unless you are into benching, there isn't much difference in the real world. None that I've noticed anyhow :p

You won't notice any difference between 2400MHz and 2666MHz Ram. I don't think it is worth an extra £33 for the Corsair.

Whilst Ram clearance is good with the BeQuiet cooler, you might have issues with it encroaching on the top pci-e slot. The Noctua doesn't have that problem as it is offset. You can also fit a 2nd fan if you want extra performance, providing you have room in your case.
