Hiya!

With lockdown and all I figured now's the time to upgrade my 3 year old water damaged laptop. Was gaming a good few years ago, played the first Witcher game when it was released. Would like to play the 3rd one now. Mainly prefer single player offline games, but also do a bit of photo editing and had to get rid of Lightroom as it was just too sluggish with current setup.

I'm dead set on this case as it looks awesome and will go well with my white desktop speakers. Other than that I'm happy to hear any input and if there's potentially compatibility issues as I've been out of the game for a while. Budget around 900£. Looking to update monitor later on, for a 1440p 60+hz. Want a nice clean all-round build that's futureproofed. As there's no modern heavy titles on my radar at the moment, I'm cheaping out on graphics for now to upgrade when there's a need. Hoping the rest of stuff will be somewhat future-proofed without bottlenecks.

My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £661.71 (includes shipping: £40.44)

Other items not currently available on OCUK:
Motherboard: ASRock mini-ITX gaming WiFi 100£
GPU: Second hand Sapphire RX 570 4GB 85£

Fans:
200mm RGB Coolermaster 29£
120mm Noctua slim PWM cromax.black 22£
2x92mm Noctua slim PWM chromax.black 20£

Happy to hear input. Some concerns if motherboard will be compatible with the Ryzen 3rd gen straight out of the box? I really want wifi included, the only option I found is the 450 which is supposed to be restocked on Tuesday. https://www.overclockers.co.uk/giga...ocket-am4-mini-itx-motherboard-mb-57h-gi.html

Additionally, anyone know of a discount code or so for making a larger order? Was hoping to place order asap before discount on CPU runs out but of course want to make sure that everything is in order as shipping is 40£ to Ireland.

Cheers!

Welcome aboard.
First of all remove those competitor links.
Naming/linking to competitors is forbidden by forum rules.

That Asrock has very flimsy CPU VRM and as first gen Ryzen board BIOS support might run out.
B450 boards are better in that. Especially MSI.
(though also Asus and Gigabyte are decent)

Also if CPU is starting level model (weaker than next-gen consoles) you certainly shouldn't be able to afford various brand overpriced fans.
Some Arctic/Noise Blocker 92mm fans is expensive enough.

and for 12cm arctic p12 pwm

Thanks EsaT! Sorry I'll remove those links, all the corresponding products were sold out on OCUK's webshop so thought that wasn't relevant. I was starting to think the motherboard might not be up for the task so thanks for confirmation. Really wanted to go for native Raijintek fans but those are also sold out so just went with next option that should be silent enough, agree they're at a higher price point. CPU wise I've read a lot of raving reviews of the 3600 and seems to be a decent bang for buck CPU but happy to hear what you'd recommend instead? Again I've been out of this game for a while so really happy to hear any input.

Ryzen 3700X is the first CPU which can be considered future proof for next-gen games.
Next-gen consoles come with clock speed capped variant of it in fall/before Christmas.
But AMD is also bringing improved Zen3 architecture CPUs for AM4 socket and upgrading from 3600 to those in about two years when they go to discount would be option.
And B450 boards are likely all going to get BIOS updates supporting those.
But first gen Ryzen era boards might not get updates, or they might be half assed.

The 3600 should be good for a couple of years then you could drop in a 4700x or if you didn't want to do a CPU upgrade for the next 5 years then go for the 3700x.

I see. For my purposes I think the 3600 fits the bill, like you say I can update in two years or so when there's discount. This current update will still be a massive upgrade. My current laptop boasts an Intel I5-6300HQ 2.3 GHz.

I'm getting a bit confused by the generations of the Ryzen, is Zen2 = 2nd generation? To be specific, can I sure that this mobo would fit the 3600 right out of the box without any updates?

Thanks, I think this really fits my plan. Suppose future proof is a relative and vague definition, but if I'm grand for a few years I'm happy enough with that. Cheers.

Original Zen"1" is Ryzen 1000, then small update Zen+ was Ryzen 2000 which put Ryzen CPU model number one step ahead of architecture.

If anyone's interested in how it ended, I put in my order today including:

Ryzen 3600
Zotac 1660 super
B450 aorus pro wifi
+other items already listed (swapped for cheaper fans though)
