Santa Rosa CPU's

Hi all,

I have recently been looking at buying a laptop and have started to hear the new Intel Santa Rosa chips getting mentioned quite a lot. I was wondering if there had been any dates announced for when the new chip was due to hit the market?

Also as someone who doesn't generally follow the laptop market I am not to sure what happenn when a new CPU comes out. Do most companies just sell the same model laptops but upgrade the CPU or do companies like Sony tend to create a whole new range specifically for the CPU?

Also will they be likely to launch at an absurdly high price and drop quickly once the enthusiasts have snapped them up?

Thanks for any feedback

Hi

To answer your questions;

The chips will start to hit the market in the 2nd quarter of the year. So the next 3 months.

They will be very expensive to start off with, features include vista's speed boost, upto 1gb nand memory, Intel's turbo memory technology and intergrated wireless. Regaurding laptops, the Sanra Rose cpu's you are talking about are desktop chips. I do believe that the notebook version is called Merom 3rd reincarnation of centrino.

Napa got released earlier this month so when merom comes out your best bet would be to get a Napa, the main diffrence being the fsb set at 667mhz instead of the new 800MHz.

If any of the above is incorrect let me know i will change it but as far as im aware that is all correct.

Hope it helps,

Shr3k

Ok, firstly Santa Rosa is a chipset. It is the new Intel Mobile chipset which has many new features including the capability of running an 800mhz FSB. Therefore, intel will simultaneously release Merom chips which have an FSB of 800mhz.

If you want to know exactly what is new about the Santa Rosa platform, wikipedia is always a good source.

The new santa rosa cpu's will not be pin compatible with todays 945 GM/PM cpus. They will run at 800fsb and come in the form of Socket P and be compatible with the 965 GM/PM chipset. I read they will be out on the 19th May and Intel will spend $300million advertising them.
