Hi all. My iPod Nano 6th gen has died. I want a cheap and cheerful replacement. From looking around I gather the Sandisk Sansa is where I should be looking.

I'm unsure about their range and how each one compares to the next. I'm quite sure I'll be installing Rockbox on whichever I buy, but how do the Clip, Clip+ and Zip compare to each other?

Fantastic bits of kit, love my Zip :)

Clip = Older model, ignore it
Clip+ = This is what most people mean when they say they have a Sansa
Clip Zip = As above but with bigger colour screen and micro usb rather than mini usb (can use any usb phone charger, makes it a bit easier)

Get the Zip, it's better yet the same price or sometimes cheaper than the Clip+

Check eBay for refurbished models that are significantly cheaper still :)

I disagree. I dislike the added bulk of the Zip and really don't care for a minutely larger screen - and the smaller control pad irritates me at times. Clip+ has always been the cheapest, in fact, the Zip has never dropped beneath £29.99 (for 8GB model), whereas the Clip+ is often around £26.99 (again 8GB model).
Screen aside, they are identical in spec and my Clip+ has been with me for 5 years and gone everywhere with no damage :D. Both have expandable memory (they support up to 32GB additional memory for a total of 40GB if you go for the 8GB version).

Rockbox is great and a must, glad you've already decided on that.

The Zip is pretty much the same size as the + it's like 2mm bigger but slightly thinner and weighs less (quite a lot less actually).

I paid £26.99 for my Zip brand new :)

It's worth getting the Zip just for the Micro USB charging slot so you don't need another cable :p

This thread has popped up just at the right time.

Has anyone tried anything bigger than 32GB in the Zip? I.e. a 64GB or 128GB, read a few reports online saying they work but want to hear from someone else who is using one before I pick one of these up for the Mrs!

Also, is the only difference between the Clip Zip and the Clip Sport that the Clip Sport battery appears to last a hell of a lot longer off a full charge? and the screen is a smidge bigger? (according to specs?)

I've tried a 64gb in my (now dead) Clip+ and my current Zip and both worked fine.

The Clip Sport is much bigger and generally not as good. Plus it doesn't support Rockbox. Get the Clip+ or Zip :)

Thanks for the info dbmzk1. I've done a bit of reading and it appears it doesn't run Rockbox which is a shame as Rockbox is supposed to be a quality bit of firmware. I think I'll go with the Zip as the micro-USB charger will suit her as she has a lot of other items with that charger so will never be short of one.

I think an 8GB Zip coupled with a 64GB microSD will do the trick and be a welcome upgrade from her 8GB Nano.

I bought the Zip in the end, I want to be able to play AAC and only the Zip supports that it seems. Easy!

With Rockbox they both support AAC, but never mind! To be honest I thought they both did anyway. I prefer the Zip anyway so I think you made the right choice!

I've got a Clip+ and generally it's a decent little device, sounds good too (considering the price).
It has however locked-up on me a number of times whilst playing flac material (doesn't appear to be connected to bitrate/processing-power but i haven't really investigated it) which results in the Clip+ needing a hard-reset (hold the power button for 20secs) and whilst Rockbox works fine, the small screen and micro text (increasing text size isn't really an option as you end up missing portions of the screen and the top status bar text ends up blurring between the two 'colours') makes it's awful to use - it really needs someone to design a decent theme for it.

Just ordered my girlfriend a Sansa Clip Zip following the thread, she needed an upgrade over a borrowed Sansa Clip 2GB.

Paired it with some Urbeats & 16GB Micro SD card, will put a few words when it arrives here.

I currently have a clip+ (with the broken clip), with 32GB, and it's a brilliant bit of kit, but I was considering getting an iPod classic for the higher capacity.

If it indeed works with a 64GB card there's no need, 128 would be fantastic.

I have a clip+ for running, the Sansa firmware is absolute rubbish though, kept freezing constantly when changing track. Rockbox is better but it has a habit of constantly rebooting for no reason :(

I have a Clip Plus but want to remove the clip, it's to bulky with the clip. Any tips? Looks like I'll have to grind/melt it off.

I use Rockbox with the skin that looks like a cassette tape :p

I think you can poke the pin through and just have the lugs sticking out, or it will just break off on it's own eventually, give it time:D

£26.96 for a brand new 8GB Clip Zip, can't argue with that.

Has anyone off here actually got a 128GB card to work? Trying to suss out if I should get the Mrs a 128GB card for it or a 64GB.

Bringing this thread back to life.

My trusty little Clip+ has been destroyed by a 40KG dumbell in the gym. Absolutely gutted. I know the best regarded Clips are the Clip+ and the Zip. Prices are insane for these things now. Checked all the typical sites you would expect, was rather hoping my Google-fu would find me an uncommon site with some still for sale at reasonable prices.

Anyone still got a Zip they dont use?
