We're thinking about going to Santorini next May.

Any recommendations on where to stay (Fira seems to be most central but busiest, hoping that May will beat the main season) and places to visit/things to do?

Do you think 4 nights is enough or up it to 7?

We stayed in Oia in a cave hotel on the cliff overlooking the sea, was beautiful but it’s quite expensive there (Oia town that is). It’s the iconic place where a lot of photos of Santorini are taken (white buildings with blue domes on the cliff). We stayed at the Atrina Canava.

Definitely stay in Fira. Get a bus to Oia to watch the sunset, will be packed with people doing the same.

4 nights is more than enough, there's not really that much to do. Rent a quad bike, can explore the whole island in 1 day. Check out all the different beaches, red, white and black!

Most people stay in Oia or Fira / Imerovigli from what I recall.

Fira is a mixed bag in that it's the main town, but it's also the most built up part and it's not necessarily what people envisage when they think of Santorini - i.e. the cliff-side white roofed hotels. I spent a fair amount of time there, but stayed elsewhere and travelled in when I wanted to.

The name escapes me for right now, but the ancient city near the beach was a highlight for me.

I did at least 7 days and had a really nice time, but I didn't do much - was quite happy wandering down to the town, having lunch and wandering back. If you're just planning on seeing the sights and leaving, 4 would be fine.
