Mine finally arrived after the balls up with city link, but it does idle hot around 73c which seems stupidly high, and this is with good ventilation in the case is it worth re-sitting the cooler or just get a S1 for example.

You could resit the cooler with some better thermal paste, but it will only knock a few degrees off.

Get an S1 or Vortexx Neo, mine tops out at 55ºC with the Neo :)

There is a fan speed hack floating around the web where you create a profile in CCC and manaully input the fan speed in the profile's XML doc. A fan speed of 41% bought my temp down from 79c to around 61c and with no extra fan noise.

Edit: Here ya go.

73c eh?
This is a full 7c less than mine <chuckle>. They tell me that the card is designed to run at these sorts of temperatures up to 100c/110c indeed ! I tell them they really should put a bigger 'Warning this is HOT' sticker on the side of the card. 73c, no need to worry, just watch your fingers.

sorry for a mild thread hijack :P

I'm going to be getting a 4850 soon and an S1 heatsink along with it, what fan would you guy recommend i fit onto the S1 ?

i find setting the fan control manually on my sapphire card is too loud. even at 40% it gets on my wick. and i'm no silent pc freak either. so i've left mine on auto. so what if it idles at 80c? :D

Yeah found the fan hack and got a comfortable level of noise and its taken it from 73 idel too 61 so that do for now.

i do want to get a better cooler tbh looking at that Neo one, does it fit easily or do you have to make any modifications.

Its surprising how duff the stock cooler on these cards really is. I took it off and stuck a water block on and its idling at 31 instead of 80C. Go grab that S1 :D

They cheap enough the S1's, do you need the turbo module fans or can you strap a 120mm to it, and has anyone fitted one in a antec 900 gaming case was wondering if the side window 120mm fan can still be used.

I wont be getting a sapphire 4850 then by the looks, if what you say is true cos....
1. Cant be doing with a loud card, so much so, Ive updated the bios on my 3870 cos at idel the fan was at 41% and quite loud, so Ive knocked that down to 20%.
2. 70 - 80c when idel:eek: My 3870 runs at 40 - 45c when idel and 70 - 80c at load. Also I bet your case is quite toasty with the card running 70 -80c at idel

Just stick a Accelero S1 on ? no hassle.

I wouldn't say that toasty my q6600@ 3 gig is putting temps of 38-42 across the cores i can't say thats gone up since i put in this card, and its a warm day today.

My 4870 idles at around 82 degrees and was playing TF2 last night for an hour and it got to 85 as the fan span up, I just let it idle at 82 aint doing no harm.

At moment all the 4850s are identical apart from labeling as they are all the reference design, the sapphire is as good as any other. I would do what im going to do and just use an S1, its a cheap heatsink really.

Either that or wait a few weeks for companies to release thier own improved versions or the cards but these will be at some form of price premium and I really dont think you can go wrong with the S1.

Did you expect the 4870's to be cool running? Just buy a new cooler.

Id expect it to be more or less the same temps as Ive got now with my 3870. 70 - 80c at idel isnt gonna last very long, and I dont care what anyone says.

Basically ati should do the job properly or not at all, but thats it everything is todo with money nowadays, and if they think they can getaway with putting cheap cruddy coolers on their cards, they will.

So I will wait untill they improve the cooler on these cards before I even think of getting one

Sorry If I sound harsh, but this country is going down the pan and it really bugs my that everthing is todo with money and sod the quality.. bring back the good old days I say:p

If 70-80 idle wont last long then 70-80 load wont last long, its fine imo but the only reason its that hot is due to the fans spinning too low and these cores run hotter than the 3870's, they have a lot more sp's and other things in the core did you expect it to run cooler??

The cooler is nothing to do with this country going down the pan since ATi are canadian its that country related.

If 70-80 idle wont last long then 70-80 load wont last long.

What dose that mean ?? 70 -80 at load will last long cos its not at that temp all the time is it, but 70 - 80c from the moment you turn your system on till the moment the sys is turned off is stupid, it will be dead within a yr or so, if its kept at that temp I bet, or games will start going wrong.
