I have all new
A64 3700 San diego
Asus sli premium
Sapphire x1800xt 256
580w hiper type r
one gig of (2x256 + 1x512)mixed ddr333 ram
Nothing overclocked.
I`ve seen some folks getting 2xaa +hdr max sliders up at 1024x768 which i`m playing at but with max 2xaa i`ve had to reduce a lot of settings ie hardly any grass, shadow filtering off minimal shadows etc and tweaked the ini till blue in face.
A couple of days ago i maxed all the sliders up and it ran better, then day after it was back to laggy?? whats up with that?
I`m thinking the ram is my weak spot which i`m hopefully replacing with 2x1 at wkend.
I`ve read of issues with others with almost same system with 2 gig ram and of fps drop after while, needs reloading constantly.
Wondering what everyone elses performance with oblivion is like and would there be much of a difference overclocking cpu and xt?
Cheers

Oblivion responds really well to CPU overclocks. A little boost in that should see the game improve loads. I'm currently running an X1800XT and an A64 [email protected] and can run Oblivion with most settings on high. If I were you I would overclock your CPU slightly, you might get better results then:)

Got some cheap twinmos 2x512mb ddr400 as i`m skint and not noticing much difference to be honest in dual channel, having to tweak more as a result.
I`ve added old mem to a total of 1.5 dual channel but there wasn`t a huge difference either.
I`ve now got 1.75 gig in (3x512 +256) in single channel at 333 and thats a bit better. Can`t help but feel x1800xt is underperforming. With 2xaa and bloom and shadows off etc in cities it drops to under 20 when theres a few npcs about hmph.
Will try an overclock in ccc,and get cpu up to 2.4 see how it goes
Any ideas?

I have an opty 165 at 2.4, and an x1800xt 256. I can run it with all the sliders up an 1280x1024, but I use HDR and no AA. Get a little stuttering in forests during the day, but is's fine other than that. I have 2gb Gskill zx, maybe that makes the difference.

Just picked this game up today, i'll let you know how my x1800xt does.

I'm not expecting magical results, but i'll post whatever happens.

Do people generally prefer a lower resolution with AA or a higher resolution with no AA
For me, I always value FPS over graphics, and would more often than not, put the eye candy down in order to run at the native resolution of my monitor.

Your ram setup is terrible would make the pc run really bad, you need 2gb of ram ideally for oblivion (2X1gb sticks).
Overclock you cpu also the x1800xt requires a good cpu to power it fully.

At 1280x1024 with all the sliders and settings maxed and hdr + 2xaa (using chuck patch) I get an average of 30 fps outside in built up areas. Thats running with spec in sig. So only real difference is my cpu is clocked to 2.85gig and I'm using 2x1gig of ram.

That's strange.

With my x1800xt 256, I run at 1600x1200 and get an average of 35fps in the hills, and around 50 fps in the towns. Dropping the res to 1280x1024 makes it a bit faster in the hills but no difference in the towns. That's with a 2.6ghz 146 and 2gb gskill ddr500.

One thing I've noticed though is occasionally the performance is terrible, nothing to do with different areas or times of day. Most days it runs well, but some days it's slow as hell. Might be due to overheating, but it sometimes happens immediately which might suggest it's not overheating.

The towns, and to a lesser extent dungeons, are pretty heavily CPU-limited, outside environments are more GPU-limited. :)

I have found that I'm getting 30 fps+ out in grassy areas whereas in the cities, I am struggling with 12-14 fps. Looks like I might benefit from overclocking my E6300 (currently at stock) to improve my framerates. Has anyone had the same experience as me? I too have a X1800XT 256Mb - not overclocked.

EDIT: Forgot to mention that I'm running it at 1440x900 widescreen.

That's definitely odd as there's no way performance should be dropping that low on a Conroe. It could be that Oblivion isn't optimised for the extra goodies Conroe offers, so hopefully we should see performance increases in future patches on those processors.

Other than that, I'd say your idea is the best course of action. Slap an overclock on it and see if performance increases.

Definately noticed that, one day fine, terrible next day.Maybe it depends on which cycle the moon is in :).
I got 2x1gb corsair, did a mild cpu overclock for extra 200mhz that pushed the ram to 217 also. After tweaking loads i went back to an original ini and just used a few like using 512mb for preloading areas, smoothed things out.
After applying following tweaks cities with lots of people were also a lot smoother and now i`m enjoying oblivion at mostly full sliders with 6.6 oblvion cats-hdr+aa looks great.Still an odd fps drop now and again, but reloading save clears it up.

my dothan x800xtpe combo runs oblivion great at 1280x1024 maxed settings but no aa or hdr (card doesnt support it)

x800 does support HDR, just Oblivion doesn't on the x800 series. ;)

Hence why the x8 series has HDR in HL2. :)

It's a bit of a buggy game as you've noticed luminous. Sometimes you leave a shop and for no reason the game is down to 20 fps. Quick save, quick load and it's back to 40 fps
