Hey guys,

Just started my new build today and on the fitting of my 2900XT I’ve come a bit unstuck...

It’s my first PCI-e card and although I’ve got a PCI-e compatible PSU, the Enermax Liberty I wasn’t sure on the PCI-e cabling – so far I’ve hooked up the GPU with the dedicated 6 pin, is that all I need, because I still have another dedicated 6 pin cable and another 8 pin vacancy on the GPU?

My systems not booting either atm, so I know something’s not right :(

Can anyone clarify for me?

Cheers,

SW.

PS. Is it me, or is the 2900XT the noisiest card in the world? Atm, both sides of my case are off and the noise is incredible?!

The 2900XT is a noisy card compared to it's competitors, however some people say it's silent.

You need to enter either 2x 6pin PCI-E connection or 1x6pin and 1x 8pin, are you sure you've got an 8pin for the graphics on that PSU and not for the mobo?

If you don't have both the PCI-E connectors in the fan goes to full speed, normally it's no where near that loud even when gaming.

Thanks guys!

I had a bit of a play and...

I got her to boot :)

I hope this is right tho? I pulled the 6 pin power supply out of the 6 pin housing on the card and put it into the 8 pin slot on the card and it booted - with minimal noise!

Also a red led which was on, on the card went out - I take it thats okay?

I'm currently formatting away :D

Cheers,

SW.

You need two connectors plugged into the 2900XT - either 2x6pin or 1x6pin and 1x8pin. The advantage to the 8pin is that it unlocks overclocking options in CCC. However not all PSUs come with this cable.

You can overclock with other tools anyway, but you need AT LEAST two 6pin connectors for the card to function properly.

Nope, just got the one cable in atm :(

In the 8 pin...

It seems okay, but I'll connect up the other one as soon as she restarts ;)

Thanks guys!

SW.

You are using the special 8pin connector for graphics cards right? there is an 8pin for the motherboard aswell.

I'm now using the card with 2x 6 pin PCi-e cables attached :p

Thanks people!

I might be back later to ask about overclocking :)

Cheers,

SW.

I'm not quite at the O/c stage yet, but I was wondering if it is possible to check the temp of the card through the ATI software?

Cheers,

SW.

I think the temperatures in the Overdrive section, but its greyed out with 2x 6 Pins, you need an 8x Pin + 6x Pin to unlock it, you can use ATi Tool though, im not really sure though if the temp is still in the Overdrive tbh, as they've changed the control panel since i last used the cat drivers.

Yes your right, the temperature is in the overdrive section which does not show until 8pin & 6pin are in use.
Using rivatuner to check my temps.

I'm getting my 2900XT tommorow, I have an 8pin plug. Can I use just the 8pin or do I need an 8pin and a 6pin plugged in?

Cheers Tom. If by some miracle I've managed to imagine this 8pin connector will 2 6 pins be ok for overclocking with the AMD tool?

Thanks guys!
