Sapphire 290x detection problems

Wondering if anyone has come across this problem or can suggest any solutions beyond returning the card as faulty.

My new Sapphire R9 290x card is not detected as a 290x (or anything beyond the basic Microsoft display driver) no matter what I attempt.

Status so far:

- Cleaned out all traces of all display drivers in case of some kind of conflict, no change.
- Have adequate power supply to the card, card functions fine, but only as basic display driver.
- Tried the card in two difference motherboards with latest bios (M5A87, Crosshair V Formula-z), no change.
- AMD 'auto detect' driver gizmo suggests that I do not have a relevant AMD card installed (no device detected). The 'contents' of the PCEI slot are registered as '0x1002:0x67b0' which is correct for this card, but can't seem to go any further.
- If I swap out the 290x for my old 7950 everything works again with no problems.
- After many many hours searching online I found only two people who had experienced the same issue, which was unresolved and required RMA.

It feels like the card's bios is missing that part that says 'hey! I'm a 200 series AMD card'.
Various different diagnostic programs can detect it as an AMD/ATI card, where it is on the motherboard etc but none can identify it beyond that, or how much memory it has and so on.

There are no errors of any kind to speak of that could tell me/you more other than the inability to detect the card as what it is.

Any help would be much appreciated.

System specs below:

CPU - AMD FX 8350 @ stock
Mboard - Asus Crosshair V Formula-z
RAM - 4x4 (16gb) Crucial ballistix
PSU - Akasa Venom gold plus 850w
SSD - Samsung 840 120gb
HDD - WDC Green 1TB, WDC Green 3TB
BD - Pioneer BD-RE
OS - Windows 8 Pro

Try the other BIOS switch on the card. The make sure the BIOS ont he motherboard is up to date. Then RMA.

I am having this issue aswell...

And after waiting a week for my order to even be dispatched thinking that an RMA may take till after the new year to get to me makes me cringe with anger.

I received a brand new waterblocked 290x which is having the same problem no matter what I do. Any other graphics card? no problem...
