Sapphire 390 at 1010 instead of 1040

Got my r9 390 from Overclockers yesterday and the core clock is showing as 1010 when the advertising blurb says it's factory clocked to 1040. Minor difference I know and I will look to clock it higher than that anyway but is there a reason for this?

What would be a decent overclock for this card and should I do it though catalyst overdrive or TriXX?

May have been an error in the description on the shop site. Ocuk have recently updated the site and there are a few little niggles here and there.

Cant answer the overclocking part though as im not to familiair with AMD card clocking.

If you simply want to raise the clock a little without any fuss, then CCC will be perfect for this. If you want to overclock higher, or start altering voltages (up or down) or play with can curves then Afterburner is hard to beat, IMHO.

Did you get the correct card?

When OCUK was selling the Sapphire Fury Tri-X o/c'd they finished the stock and started giving the non overclocked version to some of the people who had ordered and paid for the o/c'd model.

Check on the box to make sure your 390 is the right one (Like with the Fury they will look identical except for a small OC sign on it) and if it isn't get the price difference refunded. It may only be a tenner or so but pay for what you get.

Another worrying thing. I turned my pc on and I'm browsing the web for a few minutes (no videos) when I hear the fans spin up to full speed for a couple of seconds then die back down.
I checked the temp in catalyst and it had hit 90c! It dropped quickly after that even though the fans had dropped to a low speed.

So, it seems the fans didn't kick in at all until it hit a danger zone temp, why?
And even then, these cards fans aren't meant to even spin up till it hits 60c so they should be able to run silent and relatively low temp while doing non-intensive work. Browsing OC and the BBC website is hardly taxing enough to make a card hit 90c?!

the backplate version shall do 1040mhz.
90c while browsing seems out of order.
need to check usage and temp as it might be an example that has bad core contact.

Hi there

I've checked, they are correct partcode blah blah. Does the card have dual BIOS? Maybe you need to flick it to the other BIOS?

For now I have adjusted 1040MHz down to 1010MHz, as my only guess is Sapphire made an error or change actual stock last minute to 1010MHz, won't have any impact on performance thought to be honest, maybe 1fps max. :)

Something doesn't sound right here at all.

My backplated version, bought last week, shows 1040MHz core clock in Afterburner.

With the default AMD fan profile, mine is running at 24% at ~46 Celcius, having been sat idle for the last ~45mins while I was away from my pc. While gaming, I have yet to spot temps go above 60 Celcius.

Pressed the BIOS button inwards which I understand to be the uefi version, with unpressed being legacy. Switching to legacy gives me no display (I have a uefi BIOS). Why would Sapphire set them at different clocks anyway?

One concern if they decided to change stock at last minute is that they didn't have cards available that were binned to do the overclock reliably.
Also, the fan not kicking in promptly is a worry. I've set an Afterburner profile to ensure it doesn't happen again, and to be fair, it hasn't, but overall I'm not too enthused about this card now. :(
