Sapphire 4870

Odd, VPU recover keeps kicking in!!

That was with 3dmark 06.. 820 / 1000 Clocks, temps are below 65oc so it must be a voltage issue? I've no idea how these cards normally clock though

Ah just as I was about to start a Sapphire 4870 topic one appears.

I don't suppose you can benchmark some games (WoW / LoTRO / GTA4 / etc) as I wan't to compare results. Having some real drop rates in most of them (i.e. in WoW with everything on high and VSync Off it goes from 30 to 90 FPS which means it jerks every few seconds and is annoying the hell out of me so don't know whether it's an RMA issue but it is the old card and the temp on idle is 78c and, with everything on auto, the fan utilisation is at 22%???)

I only have GTA4 out of those games M4cc45 I will give it a try for you in abit.

The hottest my card got playing BF2 was 50oc according to GPU-z but the GPU Temp.(MEMIO) [°C] , GPU Temp.(SHADERCORE) [°C] all give higher readings.

Thanks mate. Be interesting to see what you get. I remember I did the benchmark (run the game then go to video and benchmark is at the bottom) and got around 34.1 but this was at 800x600 (can't remember the rest).

Be nice to compare.

Thanks,

M.

How loud are these? Apologies if it's already been mentioned.

Quiet in desktop, fan around 15-20% and 45-50 degrees. Loud (fan at ~40-50%) and hot in games, shadercore, memio, dispio ~ 95-100 deg and core ~ 80-90.

Compared to the regular Sapphire (with Noctua paste however), fan at 23% in desktop temp 67-70 degrees and in games fan at 28-32% temp 85-90 degrees with shadercore, memio, dispio around 90-95 degrees.

Bottom line is compared to the regular heatsink/fan the new one is much louder in games and hotter. Its difficult to set ATI tool to have low noise and safe temps unlike with the regular fan. Mines going back.

Hmm I'm still deciding between the 4870 and the gtx260 and after hearing the 4870's fan, I'm kinda put off by it. If there is a quiet one around though, it might sway me.

Anyone know what the asus dark knight cooler is like?

The dark knight is supposed to be really good but I have never had first hand experience with it. Would like one though if I could afford it.

So it seems the new sapphire cooler is louder and hotter than the ones when first released?

you what!!!!!?????

mine is near on silent at 40% fan speed. even testing this out by unplugging my other two fans for 20 mins and loading up the crysis warhead bench.

my temps idle around 40deg and never (not that i've seen) go above 55deg.

i've also clocked mine to a stable 800/1000

not at all. i've not had experience with the old cooler but people reported idle temps of over 75deg.

as stated above mine gets no where near that temp

Excuse me magicroundabout, can you possibly read the label on the side of the box, there is a number quite long, it's a batch number...the same on the back of the graphics board.

I just want this number when I go buying mine....could you provide me withthe information?
Thanks in advance.

bit late but my codes on the box read:

PN 288-10E85-030SA

there is also an SKU# number but not sure you need this?

how does the PN compare to origional fans which came with the Sapphires

Hi magicroundabout,

Guess what, I have bought Powercolor PCS+ 4870 1GB at long last, the sole-reseller of Sapphire and Powercolor didnt have the Sapphire in-stock so I took the Powercolor. In fact both are priced ay HK$2099 roughly 170 quids.

I was less lucky than you, you never mentioned you encountered or came across any screen flickering issue in your post. I have. The issue came right after I installed the latest 8.12 Catalyst driver. I was too tight on time, so I didn't reinstall Windows XP Pro 32bits for the new card as I usually do in the past. Besides, I am going to install my newly purchased box version Vista Ultimate 64bits soon.

I am just curious and want to know if you have had came across a screen flickering problem after your card ran into service. The symptoms is like every time there was screen desktop activities (2D in this case), like opening up My Computer or navigating across folders within the Explorer or opening up the browser...the screen just flickered which is very annoying. I solved the problem after reading the following link: http://forums.amd.com/game/messagev...=105272&STARTPAGE=2&FTVAR_FORUMVIEWTMP=Linear

The 4870 1GB is a great card!! I followed your foot path and overclocked the card between 800/950 and 820/1010 all things go well on the 2D desktop. The temperature is only 3 degrees higher than that out of the stock core/mem speed. Is 49 degree Celsius unedr 821/1001 a normal looking figure? Room(ie ambient) temperature is quite low this time of the season, it's like 14 degree Celsius here.

I would like to know where I might find a free download of the 3D Vantage I wanted to test the card capability. I find it amazing that I can overclock even higher than the forth coming Sapphire 4870 1G Toxic version, for a much lower price!!
