Hi,

Bit of a baffling issue - had BG3 crash on me, screen went blank and GPU fans went mad. On reboot had issues trying to launch the game and after some faffing about found out device manager was showing an issue with the 7900XTX drivers. Reinstalled - and all ok again.

A few days later - bit of web use and video watching - again, black screen and fans 100%. On reboot, see post screen then same problems. :( Then on reboot fans straight away and 5 beeps from pc. Suspect card may have died.....

Tried another card in machine (my old Radeon VII) and windows was corrupted, recovery options wouldn't work. Tried reinstalling and kept on getting into boot loops. Perhaps it's a board issue....... Tried fresh install of w10 and w11, same thing. Tried on both an NVME drive and a SATA drive, clearing them first. Finally managed to get W11 to install after faffing around disabling then re-enabling network card. Installed a few things, tested with the R7 - all ok.

Tried 7900 XTX in my old Intel 4790K system - booted up fine, running benchmarks with no issues.

Put 7900 XTX back in main rig - ok initially, then whilst copying files from a backup (nothing visually stressfull) same thing happened again. Now testing card again in old system and it's benching ok, and R7 is running fine in main rig.

Everything has been running fine on main rig for months since I bought the 7900XTX. Upgraded to W11 a few weeks ago but no issues before.

I've also run a MemTest86 run and no errors detected. Even tried resetting bios even though I have no overclocks etc set.

Bit baffled why it's having this issue in such a specific setup - can't tell if the card is faulty or not, or if it's something else?

Just checked and 5 beeps from board actually indicates cpu error? Would be 8 beeps for GPU - assuming the info is correct. Can't understand why it's all ok with the R7 though.

Go back to windows 10. Maybe windows 11 is causing some issues for you. I had a problem where I had to not allow a certain windows update to install for atleast a year otherwise it would do something similar to what you are describing. This was windows 10 at the time. All is fine now and I let updates happen when pc prompts me and no problems but for a time I had to postpone the update.

I updated to latest chipset drivers, and latest gfx when I updated to Win11. Just to be sure I updated to very latest again with R7 installed before trying the 7900XTX again. There is a very minor bios version update (currently on 5.00, latest is 5.01) but have been on 5.00 for months.

Tried reinstalling W10 from scratch with R7 and end up in an install boot loop - sits spinning icon doing things, reboots, same thing - never completes. Had similar issues installing W11 until I messed about with disabling network card in bios. Installed W10 with no problems before, but that was a few versions and a few bios' ago.

I can't see how driver updates or windows would cause post beeps and no picture from post though, which has got me bemused. All working fine with the R7. Has been working ok for a few weeks until now.

Ran heaven benchmark on the 7900xtx installed in the i4790 system for a couple of hours and all fine.

I may try card again in main system with network disconnected in case it is a driver or update thing, but the post issues bother me....

With R7 installed, latest AMD drivers etc - just ran 3DMark Time Spy stress test and CPU Profile run a few times with no issues. MemTest86 test passed ok previously as well. I've disabled windows 11 driver updates, just in case. I'll try the 7900xtx again and see if I still get issues.

From what you are saying this could be an issue with your motherboard. If the 7900xtx is fine in another system it’s not likely to be that. Can you look in the windows event viewer in system section and see if there are any errors. The last time I had install problems with windows 10 as you describe it was a motherboard problem.

Unfortunately only really able to check out windows logs if it loads windows correctly in the first place. At the moment it's up and running with a fresh install of W11 and the Radeon VII installed. I tried so many things previously that I've lost track a bit. Even though I got a 5 beep code on some boots (which apparantly means CPU issue?) there was no picture and windows loaded up - or at least there was plenty of disk activity. Quite press of power button and it looked to do a graceful shutdown.

Motherboard issue is a possibility, also PSU possibly. Only way to be sure is likely start doing some parts swapping. :(

I’d add SSD to the list. Might be worth running a chkdsk for errors. I would still look in the event log for errors.

I tried both the NVME drive (which I'm currently running W11 on) and also an SSD. Cleared all the partitions etc each time. I carried out a full test of the NVME drive using the vendor software and all clear.

Using same storage now with W11 and the RVII.

Interesting - put the 7900XTX back in and...... so far it's ok? Ran a stress test run of Time Spy and that completed and passed with 98.9% or something like that. Going to keep a close eye on things for a while.....

Did you have them both connected

Could be a slightly loose connection with either throwing up a problem.

Make sure all power cables, connectors etc all firmly plugged in. Sometimes a loose connection somewhere can throw up weird things that you wouldn't expect

I must admit though reading through this thread I am also baffled.

NVME is under heatsink on the board. SSD I double checked a few times, checked data and power connections etc but as stated all tested ok. It's all rather confusing. Fingers crossed it stays ok. Played BG3 for a few hours last night with no issues.

Then there’s windows update that is very good at causing weird problems. Caught me out several times.

I had similar with vega 64 and one specific set of drivers. Locked pc multiple times and then reboot an eventually corrupted a hdd. I use the same hardware now with a much more power hungry gfx card and no issues. In short try other drivers sometimes a specific combination does not work for your machine.
