Sapphire 7950 VaporX Memory clock problem

Well I have just got my Sapphire 7950 VaporX card to replace my 2xGTX460 SLI and currently I am very impressed.

I have the card running on air cooled, standard fans with the following for benching

3930 OC to 4.8 stable
32GB RAM

7950 OC to
1275 CPU Core
1500 Mem Core
1.3V for bench only.

Score on the door are around 3DMark11 11200

The problem is, no mater what I do, lower clock, lower CPU Core etc, I just can't get the memory clock to go over 1500, not even by 1

Now I know this isn't stable at these settings, it is a bench setup. But I have seen people posting mem clocks of 1600, 1700 and even 1800.

My CPU clock is way up there with the best, 1275 on air, jeez some are only managing 1200 on water and the best I have seen is 1300.

So what is the problem, is it a physical barrier ?

I have run the tests from cold with CPU @ 950 and Mem at 1501 and it just dies, blank screen on 3DMark11 and any other tests.

Seems strange I can push the CPU clock way up and can't budge the memory clock past 1500.

Can anyone help ?

Hiya, what are you using to overclock?

Sapphire Trixx. Afterbuner caused loads of screen flickers on applying settings until you ran a test in 3dmark11 and then was fine.... strange.... Really annoying, Trixx seems to behave.

Power in Catalyst is 20%

My standard bench is now 1240 cpu and 1500 mem with 1.262v 3dmark11 score of 11163

Still can't get the mem over 1500 no mater what I do.

Can anyone help ?

Well I also have the Sapphire Radeon Vapor-X 7950 and have mine set to 1150/1500 for 24/7 stable clocks @ 1.137v and get a 3D Mark 11 score of 9297.

If I raise my core to 1200 benchmarks won't run but if I raise my memory to 1600 benchmarks run but games will crash. Haven't tried a voltage of 1.3v yet.

So I have tried 1150/1600 and its not stable, and I have tried 1200/1500 and that is not stable either but 1150/1500 is.

How do you set the voltage on these cards as I can't see it in trixx?

Get version 4.4b of triXX that allows voltage increases.

Just for laughs I tried setting mine to 1200 core with a voltage of 1.3v and it went some way into Heaven 3.0 benchmark before crashing so I know mine def won't do 1200 core even with uber voltage.

The memory makes it through benchmarks at 1600 but crashes in games to a blank screen after an hour or so.

I think 1150/1500 is near the limit with mine.

Cheers, wish me luck :)

Might as well go straight in for 1275/1600 @ 1.3v to see where you stand (set fan to 100% while testing) and if it doesn't like that in benches (try all of them because my unstable overclock makes it through some) lower mem clock to 1500 and try again and if still no joy bring core down to 1150 with mem at 1500 @1.137v core and see if that works for you too.

Yeah and I almost forgot for me 1600 memory only proved unstable after an hours worth or so of BF3 and did not show in benches (well actually it did only after 17 hours of 3D Mark 11 looped).

Thanks all.

Any ideas on why I can't get past 1500 mem clock ?

I honestly don't know, perhaps a case of the silicon lottery. Mine is the same as yours yet I cannot run at or above 1200 core and I even did a suicide run at the maximum voltage triXX allows 1.381v

My memory on the other hand benches at 1600 but is unstable in the long run after a hour of BF3 or 17 hours of 3D Mark 11.

I haven't touched the memory voltages as you can only do that in AB but anyway if I had the choice between one which could do 1275 core or 1600 memory I would always choose the 1275 core.

However as you say you haven't checked for long term stability at 1275 core.

Its funny this, I have the Gigabyte WF 7950 and have exactly the same thing, cannot no matter how hard I try get the memory to clock over 1500. AT 1500 its perfectly stable, benches, games etc, if I push it to 1505 the second I start a bench or game it falls over...... odd.

Exactly the same as me, perfectly stable at 1500 mem, the minute I nudge it to 1501, I get a blank screen on 3DMark11 or other benches.

I would have expected a gradual cut off, but doesn't seem to be the case.

My 24/7 is

1200 CPU, 1500 Mem and 1.218v
