Hi there

Today we see the release of AMD's Fury, which just like the Fury X offers pretty incredible performance especially as resolutions increase due to ultra high bandwidth HBM memory.

I did some testing with this card last weekend and I made the following notes:

- Card runs almost silently at all times, rarely exceeds 20-30% fan speed which holds the card around 70-75c temperature.
- The cooler is huge and has fantastic cooling power, with the fan say at 60-70% which is still quiet, temperatures stay under 60c and with 100% fan speed it is possible to keep temperatures around 50c, which for an air cooler is impressive, potentially the best we ever tested.
- Overclocking wise expect to see 1125-1150MHz on stock voltage, at present there is still no voltage unlock tool, but this cards cooler can certainly handle higher voltages no problem at the expense of more noise.
- Performance wise, it is slower than a Fury X and rougly on parr or faster than a GTX 980.
- The card is extremely long, be sure your case can support such a long card.

The new AMD Fury graphics card ships with 4GB HBM. HBM is a new high-performance memory standard with vertically stacked DRAM dies and fast microscopic interconnects called through-silicon vias (TSVs). AMD Fury X graphics card features a wide-interface 4096-bit HBM memory architecture enabling higher bandwidth performance and over 3X the performance per watt of GDDR5. To fully harness the power of the GPU technology,

AMD LiquidVR™ Technology enables liquid-smooth visuals and high frame rates, which will provide broad compatibility, plug-and-play ease of use, and stable platform support for tomorrow's VR vendors and technologies. Get quality that rivals 4K, even on a 1080p display while playing your favorite online games thanks to AMD's VSR. Microsoft® DirectX® 12 brings new levels of visual realism to gaming on the PC and gets top-notch performance. Moreover, the card uses PCI Express 3.0 as the standard interface, doubling the data bandwidth of PCI Express 2.0.

Powered by the latest Radeon™ R9 Fury graphics-processing units (GPUs), Strix R9 Fury is packed with exclusive ASUS technologies, including DirectCU III with a patented triple wing-blade 0dB fan design to deliver maximum airflow for 30%-cooler and three-times (3X) quieter performance.

Strix R9 Fury also has ASUS Auto-Extreme technology with Super Alloy Power II components for premium quality and reliability, plus GPU Tweak II with XSplit Gamecaster for intuitive performance tweaking and instant gameplay streaming.

Strix R9 Fury is equipped with ASUS-exclusive DirectCU III cooling technology, which features two exclusive 10mm direct-GPU-contact heat pipes - outperforming reference designs for gaming performance that's up to 30% cooler. It has three fans engineered with a patented, new wing-blade design that delivers maximum airflow and static pressure over the heat sink - giving a 105% improvement over fans without wing-blades.

This exclusive triple wing-blade design operates at noise levels three-times (3X) quieter than reference cards, making DirectCU III the coolest and quietest graphics-card-cooling solution available to date. Strix R9 Fury also features 0dB fan technology, which stops fan rotation completely during lighter gaming sessions - eliminating noise for undisturbed gameplay.

Strix R9 Fury benefits from ASUS-exclusive Auto-Extreme technology, the industry's first 100%-automated manufacturing process that removes human fallibility from the production line for consistent perfection - making it ultra-reliable in all scenarios, from general everyday use to hardcore gaming and overclocking. Auto-Extreme technology eliminates flux to minimize dust buildup and oxidization, and makes the rear side of the graphics card's printed-circuit board totally smooth, increasing comfort for system-builders. This new manufacturing process is also environmentally friendly, eliminating harsh chemicals and reducing power consumption by 50%.

Strix R9 Fury features Super Alloy Power II components that enhance efficiency, reduce power loss, decrease buzzing under load, and lower thermal dynamics for unsurpassed quality and reliability. Strix R9 Fury features a superior 12-phase power design compared to reference cards built with 8-phase power designs. Complementing its amazing reliability, Strix R9 Fury is built to be incredibly tough. It comes with a GPU-fortifier and strengthened backplate that provides superior GPU protection and also prevents the PCB bending over time.

Strix R9 Fury also comes equipped with High Bandwidth Memory (HBM), a new type of RAM featuring ultra-wide communication lanes and low power consumption to deliver ultimate performance and energy efficiency.

Redesigned with an intuitive, all-new user interface, GPU Tweak II makes gaming and overclocking easier and more visual than ever, while still retaining advanced options for seasoned overclockers. With one click, the new Gaming Booster function maximizes system performance by removing redundant processes and allocating all available resources automatically. An included 1-year XSplit Gamecaster premium license - a $99 value - lets gamers easily stream or record gameplay via a convenient, in-game overlay.

The final must-have flourish for Strix R9 Fury is the Strix LED that lends a style statement to any system, with pulsating light effects.

Is AMD doing anything to combat the 970 with HBM or just targetting the 980 and 980ti models with the furys and fury x?

AMD have perfect competitor to the 970, its called the 390, similar performance, same price and twice the VRAM and it is working and taking the fight to the 970 very well for them. :)

Indeed. I was surprised to see the usual ASUS tax so small.

Sapphire card does look the better option though; it's cooler, quieter and the board is the same reference design as the Fury X. So if you are going to watercool it's the one to go for and if you're going to leave the cooler on it's the one to go for.
