I've had my card now for about a month, and in the last few weeks I've experienced a few random graphic related crashes.
Vertical lines and need to hard reboot.
Total lockup and need to hard reboot.
And 1 total screen mash of pixels and need to hard reboot.
All these crashes end with the fan on my 4850 ramped up to 100%.

I had it clocked at 660/1000 (since dropped it) and was running a 55% fan profile while gaming.
It happens only in Age of Conan, which I know is a buggy game.
I've played a few other games including Crysis and not experienced any problems.

Ran 3Dmark06: No problems
Ran Ati tool: No problems
Ran Furmarc: No problems, although I stop after 10 mins........95C is scary!

It idles around 47, and about 80-85 while playing games, which I think is quite high at 55% fan.

I'm running 8.6 drivers no hotfix.

I'm pondering whether to RMA as I fear I could have damaged it with th OC?
Or is it just Age of Conan's ***** coding?
Should I try 8.7 drivers?
Are these crashes graphics related for sure, and is it a overheat problem?

I've ordered a couple of Akasas Vortexx's (for future xfire), which will arrive shortly hoping this will sort out the stupid heat these churn out.

Ty for any info.

run it at stock for awhile and see if it crashs. theses cards don't like heat. when i had the stock cooler on i couldn't clock it to 700 even 680 would crash due to the temp (85c+). but when i changed the cooler to a Akasa Vortexx NEO i now can clock it to 700mhz without problems due to low load temp (52c).

u could try the 8.7 drivers.

Yeah I will run on stock for a few hours tonight, and try the 8.7. If it crashes then I will think about RMA, although it would be a last resort. From what i've read Sapphire aren't that quick.

So are these crashes heat related for sure then? And if so why couldn't I replicate it while running Furmarc at 95c?

sometimes updating drivers boost's performance and sometimes fixs crashs.
I agree.
As regards the 8.7 drivers i've read that they have been causing a few problems for some and they have reverted back to the 8.6. The 8.6 drivers were running crash free since I've had the card it's only recently that this has started, maybe it the recent hot weather causing the ambient temp increase giving me probs I don't know.
I will go through all the customary driver changes, drop the overclock etc till things are stable.

Like I said I will give the 8.7 a bash tonight, I really just want some reassurance as to whether these crashes are heat related, have I damaged my card and will the Akasa Vortexx be my saviour?

tbh i don't think it is damaged. 625 to 660 and 993 to 1000 are very small overclock.

did it crash in other games?

so its not damaged mate.. maybe driver issues or another software making it crash.

Cheers. My suspicion is AoC as it's a very buggy game. The thing that made me worry was the hard crashes with no warning or artifacts showing before, and the fan ramping at 100%.

Fingers crossed th Vortexx should sort out any heat issues. Software probs I can cope with, hardware issues are just plain worrying.

Yup, sounds like a mixture of things; Heat/poor ventilation in case/buggy games. I wouldnt worry, it sounds like the card is fine.

Like you said give the 8.7's a whirl, theyre not perfect (I still get the occasional "This driver has stopped responding" error, thankfully never while I have been gaming) but other than that, they run fine :)

Age of conan is what im playing atm and is is very buggy. It also is very good at highlighting any part of your system which is unstable because it is so demanding. I played other games happily but i was getting blue screens in conan, i backed off on my ram overclock and it was fine.

I have also had the vertical lines crash and that was down to drivers, uninstalling them and using driver cleaner and driver sweeper fixed that.

I would try the 8.6 hotfix.
