Sapphire RMA Question

I don't have Catalyst installed (I only installed the display driver) as I hate having crap running in the background. Is this a common defect of 7970's? Mine isn't the Ghz Edition, it's the Dual-X BIOS one from Sapphire.

You should install everything, its probably running. Full speed all the time and overheating? These cards downclock at idle and it can only do that with ccc installed re install the drivers and let it install everything then set control slider to 20% it won't hurt anything

Would I get away with using MSi Afterburner to the 10% slider thing? I have that installed.

This is what it looks like, could it be the power issue you're talking about?

yes,if I were you I would install everything in the amd driver package

youll see a big list with all the boxes ticked just accept and install,i don't think it will enter idle clocks without it,afterburner wont enable power saving without ccc

with these cards theres about 3 or 4 power and core/memory clock stages and depending on what your doing, web surfing/watching video/gaming it auto switches to each stage

right now its running full gaming voltage/clocks all the time and it shouldn't be,it still could be a faulty card but id def try the above first

Sorry to be bumping this but after nearly 2 weeks of hassle free gaming it's bloody started again but this time i've managed to take screenshots and a video (which is uploading now), it's 150Mb though as I didn't realise that I had my phone on 1080p.

Screen went weird earlier today so I had to shut it off holding the power button. Behaved for a few hours up until now (around 0:30am) when all of a sudden it started artifacting on WoW. Tried CoD4 and exactly the same thing but didn't record it. Note that this is the card running at stock clocks/volts without any overclocking software running in the background. tried to show this in the video when I tabbed out. Could anyone advise me on what to do here as it seems really temperamental when the card does this and i'm getting concerned that it'll die on me.

Posting pictures now, will update with vide once it's uploaded.

SNIP

Dodgy vram. Is the vram overclocked? If so put it back to stock. If you can try bumping the vram voltage via afterburner or trixxx a notch or two and see if the problem goes. If not its likely rma material. Those stripey line crashes are a dead give away of unstable memory.

matt don't you think its because the clocks aren't entering idle mode? esp the ram

the card will be running hot all the time?

Nah i can turn off powerplay and run my card at 3d clocks all the time and it will never do that. I could be wrong but my money is on dodgy vram.

How come it's so inconsistent? that's what bothers be. It was fine for nearly 2 weeks and then it went **** up again yesterday.

Again, I do NOT run this card overclocked in any way. I'll try installing CCC with the drivers and see if that makes a change.

I'm worried about the RMA of this card too. The Sapphire center is in Hong Kong and because it's really rare when this happens i'm worried that they might not be able to replicate the problem. The turnaround I believe is also a month. :/

Start overclocking the vram and see if it happens more frequently. Play some intensive games with the vram overclocked. If it is slightly faulty, might be best to try and make the fault more apparent before you send it back. ;)

id guess at your vram overheating due to running full constant ram speed, its not having a chance to cool down for example 150mhz ram clock at idle and maybe 1300/1400mhz full load

if it isn't that then the card/memory is faulty to begin with

It's been running fine today, still not installed the CCC thing as i've just got back from the Pub. Will give it another couple of days to see if it behaves, if it does it again and install the CCC driver package.

Also this is in a full size Haf X case with all the fans, HW Monitor tells me that the card is idleing at 33c and it's pretty hot today here and in my house.
