Ever since changing from my Geforce 6800 Ultra to my new Sapphire X1950 Pro i've been unable to play Counter Strike Source

I have tried everything I can think of including reinstalling windows from fresh and it always crashes on the 'intialising world' stage with an error message like this one.

It was working perfectly with the previous GF6800U card. Has anyone got any ideas. There is nothing wrong with this PC, its currently clocked at default speeds on the CPU and slow memory timings. It passes Memtest86+ and runs 3DMark loops all night AT THE SAME TIME as Prime95

Stability is not an issue, every other single game works fine. I've tried drivers 6.11, 6.12 and the new 7.1. My motherboard (Asus P4C800-E Deluxe) has the latest BIOS

This is driving me mad, can anyone provide any suggestions. Bios update for the card perhaps?

Hmm, so I wonder whats up?, is there any chance of a software conflict? Have you installed lots of programs since you reformated?

The only error screen I have seen similar to the one above is from Norton Ghost and that only appears just as I'm shutting the system down?

Yep this windows is pretty much a bare bones install right now. Just drivers and CS: Source which I downloaded entirely afresh from the steam powered website.

I've tried everything I can think of. It looks like a memory error but it isn't. I've tried runing one stick of RAM, running it at DDR and slowest timings, upping all the voltages

Basically all I can think of.
Could this card be faulty somehow? It runs everything else
Is there a bios update for these cars I could try?

Unfortunately I believe you are a victim of the notorious steam/source related application errors.
If you look at the cs forums you will find an extremely
long thread relating to yours and other very similair problems.

I have this problem, but it is playable.
I get random crashes and looping sound crash errors.
I have a ATI X800XT PE AGP and will be shortly upgrading
to a 1950 pro AGP so I will let you know if my probs are fixed.

My son has the same system as me but he has a NVidia 6800 standard.
He never gets any errors as outlined above. But he to will have his system upgraded to a 1950 AGP.

So please accept that this is a problem that valve must fix. Its not your problem.

i have the same mobo and gfx card and it starts ok for me. i don't play it though, it just gets installed by default when i install half life 2 (from dvd). :)

Actually... i've fixed it!!

I did something I had not tried before... I connected to an internet server and it worked instantly. The crashes happen when I try and create my own server, something I was just doing for testing purposes

I never play CS online, just at LANs so I never even thought of trying an internet server
What on earth is going on there

I'd be interested in how you find the 1950 compared to the 6800U (which I have).

I'm currently undecided whether to flog my [email protected] and get a conroe or get "one last" AGO card.

What processor and PSU do you have?
