Hi guys,

My friend got his Dell D520 and sapphire x1950pro, but he said: -

"Right... I put the graphics card inside the machine and opened the little bag of cables that the card states it needs... I could not find anywhere to connect these cables whatsoever so I placed the card in the slot and turned it on. The card fan makes a noise but no picture!!!. I went on the set up and the gfx card setting was auto detect so that wasnt the problem. The card isnt detected in the bios whatsoever even when the fan is on. Can someone please give me some advice. Thanks."

Basically he said that there is no 4-pin molex connector in the Dell machine, and I was wondering if it is definitely needed in order to allow the x1950pro card to work??

Thanks a lot.

Yes, you definetely need either a 4-pin molex or a 6-pin plug from the PSU to run the card.
Modern cards need more power than what the PCI/AGP port can provide, if your friends PC doesn't have anything spare to hook up to the card, you need a new PSU in order for the card to work.

maybe use the the dvd power cable if it works buy a splitter

but probably need a new psu that my not be as straightforward as it sounds as i heard dell use there own style of plugs on there psu's

no dell actually uses a standard psu these days, they no longer uses their own style ones...

but just that they decided to leave us with no molex connector this time round (they had molex in the older batch)...

i am thinking of getting a SATA to molex adapter, since there is a spare SATA connector... would that work?

thanks

as in something like this: -

Just read this article here, i am pretty sure that the sata to molex connector is all we need for the x1950pro to work with the dell psu.

http://techgage.com/article/tagan_tg1100-u95_1100w_power_supply/2

From the article about the PSU (not the dell one, but in similar situation actually)
"There's 10-SATA, 3+1-molex, 8 pin EPS, 4 pin ATX 12V and a 20+4 ATX. Yes, I know that the molex count is weak but you get 4-SATA to molex converters, yes, that's right, they're the reverse of what you're used to seeing. Instead of making a molex work with SATA devices this makes SATA connectors work with devices requiring molex connectors. This future proofs the unit for SATA devices when they become the norm but also allows for the support of the current (and past) crop of ATA and EIDE devices along with peripherals that use molexes for power."
