Sapphire X3870 X2 Boot Up Problems Help!

Ok my system is basically a Asus P5W DH, 2 gigs GSkill Ram, Targan Modular 580w Hard drive. Intel Core 2 Duo 6600. I have 2 optical drives and 3 hard drives connected.
I installed the card and connected the 6 pin power lead (does the 8 pin connector have to be used as well?), I am getting 1 long beep and 3 short beeps when I switch on.
I have tried to limit the power output buy disconnecting what I could to see if its a power issue, could this be the problem? I have checked and checked again that the gfx card is seated in the slot properly.
 
you have to plug both power connections in

you can plug in a 6 pin into the 8 pin connector (which is what I've done) but you loose the ability to overclock via overdrive in ATI driver
 
That's def the lack of 2 power cables. I had the same issue with the OcUK GTX when i had one. Was a bit of a donut and didn't take any notice of the big clear black text on the bag it was supplied in saying "Ensure you use both 6-pin connectors" !
 
OOo I'm having the same problem with my HIS 3870 X2...

will try the 2 plugs and see what happens ><

Make Sure the 8 Pin Power Connecter is PCI-e & NOT the 8 pin power connecter for some moterboards ,some psus have a 8 pin for motherboards, if u try use that u fry all the parts to death .so make sure ,the long beep is letting u know theres not enouth power to the card ,use 2 x 6 pin pci -e connecters ,if u not got a 8 pin ,some of the 8 pin pci -e got 6 pin & 2 pin on it own,but with out the full 8 pins in use u may lose the ati overdrive in ccc software.

Ok thanks, not back home to try it yet but I have had a thought. Right with a side view of the card and the exhaust hole on the right. if i label the 8 pin connection 1 & 2 on the left through to 7 & 8 on the right of the power socket, does this mean i have 2 options in the way i plug the power lead in? ie leaving 1 & 2 pins spare or the other option leaving 7 & 8 pins spare, does it matter or will it only fit in one way. Sorry if i sound daft but I dont wanna see £300 quid go up in smoke.
 
Looking at the card the same was as you, just using the 6pin plug should leave 7&8 free on the card. I have the extra 2 plug adapter on my PSU and they go into pins 7&8:
