The girlfriend and I are looking at going for a nice summer jaunt in July. Something nice and easy but with a bit of culture or places to explore. For some reason we've got Sardinia stuck in our heads but we're not really sure where to start. Can anyone recommend any towns/places to stay? We'd be after a bit of culture, definitely good food, relaxed evenings. We're not really beach people but being on the coast would be nice. Thanks for any pointers :)

Alghero is fine for a few days, a bit of a hidden gem Imo. Old town is nice and the beach is pretty decent to. Great places to eat as well.

Alghero is lovely. I would recommend hiring a car because it's the only way to reach some of the best beaches such as Porto Ferro. We stayed in the Sa Cheya Relais hotel (no 1 ranked on TripAdvisor) just outside town which I would highly recommend, it's a small quiet hotel with friendly staff, a great pool, amazing breakfast and has one of the best restaurants in alghero on site. If you're not hiring a car it might be a bit out of the way though.
