Sat nav and speed camera detector decision

I'm a bit stuck on what to get here.

What I'm after primarily is a speed camera detector, I've researched and the options are either a snooper or a road angel. The road angel is ruled out due to needing a subscription. Out of the snooper range the snooper lynx gt lite looks best however I've read that the Aura camera database isn't that good? It also doesn't power on and off with the ignition.

At the moment I'm using a cheap sat nav with iGo maps and speed cameras. The speed cameras are good however it tells you there are cameras where there aren't and it thinks some motorways are 50 MPH etc, road speed generally seems a bit off with it. I got it off eBay and don't think it's got a legit license to update the maps.

Ideal option I think is a device that powers on and off with the car and If i can get an updated nav that does cameras as well that'd be a bonus.

I don't want to use my phone but I do have a tablet but I think this would be too big (10").

I do not want a subscription based device.

On my current sat nav there's an option to delete the route and as you drive along it'll follow you on the satnav and still warn you of camera even if you haven't told it to navigate you somewhere. This is what I'm after if possible.

Any ideas?

If you don't want subscription then you're out of luck if you want it top work on a tablet.

You can by radar detectors - like the Beltronics PRO RX65 or Valentine One (G3) but you'll be spending £300-£400+

You really need a live subscription device for any decent level of detection. Without that you're not going to get camera van reports, and they're putting up new fixed cameras all the time (which are the most likely ones to be active) so you'll be missing out on those as well.

Personally, I've found the smartphone app Waze by far the best option - it updates live and people seem to report police speed traps/camera vans practically as soon as they appear. Best of all, it's free! Devices like the Valentine one are great for Gatso cameras but useless for everything else and usually cost £250-£300.

@mattyg - That's the problem, with the snooper kit: Lynx GT Lite and Pantera you get free lifetime camera updates. These are the only two that I've seen however.
That's my next option really, I've been looking at Garmins which some come with free lifetime maps then so much on top for one-off camera updates. How much is the TomTom subscription?

@Freefaller - I did come across those, I was having a look on: http://www.speedcamerasuk.com/radar-laser-detector.htm they are pricey.

@geekman - I agree, live subscription is always going to be the best. I've seen devices which have "hot spots" as they warn of the areas where camera vans are located.

I came across wave however it needs a data connection, my tablet is WiFi and GPS only. Want to avoid using my phone and insted have a standalone device. Wave does look really good though.

I'm not a big speeder I just drive around a lot of new places and the amount of cameras I have come across has increased a lot. Plus those I've seen hidden behind trees and signs, it's very easy to get caught.

My SatNav is out of date anyway so my plan really is either:
Get a satnav with lifetime maps and one off speed camera database (that can be updated for £)
Get a satnav with lifetime maps and a seperate camera device (lynx gt lite or pantera) with free cam updates

I too drive all over the place, including Europe, I've never had a speed camera aid and guess what, never had a speeding ticket either. Just a parking fine! Lol

I've not used it as I only really drive on the same roads all the time which I know well, but have heard waze is good.
I used to subscribe to the pocketgpsworld updates for a tomtom which seemed accurate, no idea if it's still running though.
