My dad is sick of not having a sat nav, so said I would find out about the best one. Price not really an issue, although doesn't want to be spending anything like a grand. Seen a few like the Snooper indago which has speed camera locations which he wants as well.

Any help would be appreciated.

Mike

edit: portable!

does anyone know where the search function has gone? or am I being stupid?!

Hi

I'd strongly recommend a TomTom One

I've got the original one and it's been faultless - fast mapping, good routes, portable and you can download speed camera locations and traffic info (for a small fee) from TomTom themselves

As for the search function - it's been disabled. Not sure why but there's a thread in GD

I have the TomTom ONE as well and love it. I read a bunch of reviews before I got it. The TomTom ONE is a reasonably cost effective and good solution for those whose needs are not quite as demanding basically; the smaller screen and it does not pronounce street names and places. In my opinion the screen size is plenty and name pronouncing is not really necessary. The screen displays the name of the next road that you'll turn-to continuously and displays place-name signs that enable you to figure what lane you should be in. The general audible instructions are plenty for keeping you on-track.

TomTom's also just look sharp. Some of the others that bristle with buttons along the sides I think look tacky.

I also recommend the free Trye software that links TomTom with Google Earth. Handy for seeing what a messy intersection for example actually looks like before hand. The link is in the question/answer section of TomTom site. Don't have the link handy right now.

Garmin Nuvi 300....Its the best one for the money - simple as that

^^ :)

Tomtom One is not as good, I have to use my sat nav putting in approx 80 different post codes a day and out the two the garmin nuvo 300 is better in pretty much every way.

 I'll assume you're a courier. I never knew that the workload was so high.

I'm also in the market for either one of these and was assured the TomTom One was a better buy due to the superior interface. Some said the Garmin interface was programmed by either children or boffins because of it's awkwardness. It's so hard to get the wallet out when everyone has contrasting opinions on this.

After reading up on other GPS forums I'm personally leaning towards a TomTom One XL Europe.

It's arguable whether the bigger screen is worth the extra price, so you might want to look at the other TomTom models as well. I recall that the XL has not much more features than the plain ONE.

...my forum name by the way: just a coincidence :)

I use my tomtom one every day on all roads, from motorways to farm tracks and I've not had any problems at all. Very occasionally it will take me a route that I'm sure is sub-optimal, but it always gets me where I want to go in a good time.
