SATA 4 drive to 1 "part" - whats it called?

There was some talk on here once about a SATA2 "bit" that could take 4 drives pluged in and have one cable coming out to the SATA connector on a card.
2 questions:

1) What is the name of this "bit" (port replicator sounds good but google draws a blank)

2) Do they work with any SATA controller or only specific cards?

ill answer my own - got lucky on search terms :)

1) Its called a port multiplier

2) looks like you do need a seperate card to run the show
