SATA Controller Cards

Looks like my wife's ABIT KN-8 SLI mobo is giving problems. I keep having issues with devices connected to the SATA of the motherboard, thus far have 'lost' 2 harddrives.

I reinstalled her PC again last night using IDE DVD Drive and IDE Harddrive only. As soon as I installed any SATA devices, the PC takes ages to go through the BIOS when it detects drives.

Im guessing that the SATA controller on the mobo might be stuffed. Perhaps Ive just lost 2 drives in quick succession (then again, my Raptor that I tried in her PC came out of mine working but gave issues in hers) so on that basis, looking for a potential SATA controller card.

1. The Asus one for around £30 that is stocked by OCUK, any comments? Looking for something that will work easily and reliably, mainly in Windows 7 type environment.
2. Could it be that something else is wrong with the mobo (IDE and SATA not related, therefore if one is faulty, the other should be too)? Ive reflashed the latest bios, no change as such.

Thanks in advance.

Have you tried a different SATA (data) cable and different power cable?

Ive used different cables but I must admit - they dont seem to seat well, certainly not a nice tight fit. Then again, the cable with the raptor drive is much better and what I had been using before on my own PC without issues.

In terms of power, no - limited options on her power supply but will relook at it later.

Thanks.

Might be just as cheap picking up a 2nd hand system board to be honest.

Perhaps. I was actually looking at upgrading my current quad core PC and give her my setup but the price to upgrade at the moment is too high - so will hang back on that.

In the same breath - would be nicer to keep what we have, dont have to format the machine but again, Im 'troubled' by the motherboard as I dont know whats going on.
