Gigabyte x58 board, it has intel sata2 and Marvell sata3 controller. Apparently the Marvell controller is trash (even though flashed bios)

Is it worth getting a decorated pci-e satan3 controller as when I buy a new sata won't be limited to sata2 speeds.

Also years ago could buy cached idea controllers do these still exist for regular spinning hard drive setups? Also got a adpected 2940uw I believe those risc chips were very fast are modern controller chipset have power to off load i/o from CPU?

Are you finding you struggle with saturated SATA connections? 300MB/s is blazing fast for file transfers which is the main benefit. If you want faster I/O you probably want an SSD which uses newer architectures (i.e. an NVMe drive). This would require either a new motherboard or a PCIe card to mount it in.

So I'd consider your needs really. I've been running SATA3 SSDs in SATA2 ports in several PCs (mostly H61). They work fine and the I/O performance of SATA SSDs isn't phenomenal anyway so I'm not missing much.
