In the past I have taken power for fans and such like, from IDE hard drives, using molex Y-adaptor (Y-splitter) cables, but does anyone know if I can get such a thing to take power from a SATA power plug?

I`ve had a look on the web and can`t find any and I don`t want to have to cut into any wires...on this occasion :D

No you cant, not unless you have a modular psu. You will have to use the conventional 4pin molex y splitters that you have used before.
