I have a Sony Vaio vgn-n38e/w and i have just taken the hard drive out as was thinking upgrade to SSD rather than buy a new laptop.

Can I fit one though as it is SATA HDD in there at moment?

Cheers.

Yes you can, a SATA3 drive will work on SATA1/2 perfectly fine, just limited to those speeds. But the difference an SSD will make will be huge just from the access times.

Thanks. So there would be zero improvement?

I wasn't expecting SSD speeds as I know it will be limited to SATA bandwidth but I thought that it would spend more time maxing out on bandwidth whereas on a 5400rpm drive it's slow?

Got one installed now and all back together. On Windows performance it is at 6.9/7.9 on disk performance. :)

Might keep a new laptop delayed until I start uni next year hopefully.
