Anyone know of any goods one's Needs to have 5 ports and be able to use RAID 5, Also not to expensive.

Any idea's

Good at RAID 5 and not too expensive - no wonder this thread hasn't got many replies :D

I've not got any experience with the cheaper ones though sorry but I do know when it comes to RAID 5 there are major performance gains in the more expensive hardware-based controllers. By hardware-based I mean XOR calculations are done on the controller.

How much you willing to spend?

Get the XFX Revo64? Ok its raid 3 but close enough to 5. Cheap whilst being a proper hardware controller too, no drivers needed.

The Revo64 looks really cool, I am going to go for it.

Although what i do want to know is what size will the parity drive need to be?

Thanks

Quoted from the sticky in this forum:

RAID-3. This type uses striping and dedicates one drive to storing parity information. The embedded error checking (ECC) information is used to detect errors. Data recovery is accomplished by calculating the exclusive OR (XOR) of the information recorded on the other drives. Since an I/O operation addresses all drives at the same time, RAID-3 cannot overlap I/O. For this reason, RAID-3 is best for single-user systems with long record applications. At least 3 drives needed.

The same size as the others :p A

Search your local friendly auction site for "Silicon Image 3114" - that chipset supports RAID5, and should cost no more than £20 for an add-in PCI card. It'll be SATA1 mind you, not SATA2. I've not seen any cheap SATA2 4 port cards - if you find any, let me know ;)
