Hey all

I was wondering if there was such a thing as a SATA to USB cable to plug in a 3.5" hard drive or a DVD drive and use through USB

I know you can buy docking stations for hard drives which just slot in, but i want to be able to use DVD drives as well

any ideas?

Thanks

Yes there are and the one I bought even does IDE and the little IDE that laptops used to have.

Look for USB SATA IDE

thanks i did see loads on auction site, does it look like a black box with a cable attached which is USB ? they all say they are for 2.5" drives but im unsure if it would work even though i can get one that says 22pin (7+15)
so a little confused

You might be looking at the wrong thing.

I'm semi sure I got mine from USBnow which appears if you search with those words above.

Thanks for your help
i did a search like you said and came up with the one on that website . Model No: VE328/VE225

Do you need this one then ? (with power suply) seen them on auction site, same thing, but they say for 2.5" drives and you can get one little as £3 or one with a power suply for around £15 / £16

A 2.5" hard drive caddy can be had for a few quid but you won't be able to attach an optical drive to it, or at least not without some creative modification. In addition 2.5" drives are 5v 500mA or less while 3.5" and opticals are 12v and 5v drives so will be difficult to power without having a power supply suitable or a nice long Molex to sata power cable.

The one I have, as I say does more than just connect to a sata hard drive, it also has IDE and mini IDE interfaces which while of use for me might not be of much use to you.

cheers Tealc i didnt know you had computer eqipment in your galaxy ! lol

so best to get one with a power supply then, thanks for your help
