Satisfactory Alpha release

Just started tonight. Been a bit hesitant to build a proper factory so it's a complete mess but at least I'm working towards the space elevator. It does seem that biomass lasts a lot longer than I remembered so may get a bit more adventurous with my ghetto start setup

Just finished a combined plastic/rubber plant with fuel generators to burn off the waste and give more power, also attached a small computer factory as I need them going forwards until I build a large dedicated plant for them.

The dimensional depot is such a fantastic addition and really does save an awful lot of time from running back and forwards to get supplies, now I'm just spending that time hunting down spheres and loops lol.

And here's me who's just setup his 1st coal power station after 10 hours
Managed mine after about 4:30 so you've helped me feel a bit better about that!

Question to anyone who knows, does length of pipeline matter in terms of water delivery? I've run a reasonable length across the map with a pump to get it over the first hill then it's all down hill/level from then on. Seemed to be taking an age to get to the later sections in a any real quantity so I've stuck another pump in about half way just in case.

I’ll make you both feel better then as I turned in my first coal generator at about 20 hours :D But I spent a lot of time gathering hard drives and Mercer spheres and building an actual iron factory that I now need to tear down.

As for pipes, it can take a while as it needs to fill all the sections. It should only be the headlift you need to care about. Long pipes were sometimes buggy in earlier versions so may still be buggy.

Think I've just about to get to the point of it all being a slog now. Unlocked everything up to tier 9 (got one tier 9 level), but the final pieces are really complex and my factory a bit of a jumble now. I did make one smart move many many hours ago of building a central storage depot though, been so handy to have everything I've needed within one facility. Might tap out of the game now.

Yeah I've not done any hard drives and only just picked up my first slug after setting that coal power to good use and exploring a bit more.

Pipes had all filled when I finished having a rearrange so seems fine. Next session will be focused on starting an actual factory layout and trying to balance things properly...

How much did you find you need a central storage with the remote storage depot? I’ve only used it for the stuff for belts but was expecting not to really need central storage much in 1.0.

The dimensional depot completely negates the need for any central storage if you bother to collect and set them up, spend the time collecting mercer spheres instead and just build depots for critical items as you go, grab the first upload speed, inventory upload and then concentrate on stack increase upgrades and it'll negate any reason whatsoever for a central storage area other than a cool building with everything in it.

I’ve decided not to watch any YouTube videos ahead but have a go myself and then check back how I did. I’ve now completed through phase 1 and checked versus Bitz’s video for the same and he took so much less space! I hadn’t even considered to build smelters below and constructors above on levels as so used to factorio one plane!

Will need to have a rethink about how to lay out. Also not really figured out how to prepare to scale up as 50 to 1000 smart plates at currently 2/minute is quite a step up :)

On the scaling up front, without going in to detail so you can figure it out yourself, the game does somewhat scale with you (allowing you to gather more raw resources, giving easier access to resources further away etc.) but part of the game is revisiting and rebuilding older factories as you progress. But there's also an element of you probably don't need to scale as much as you may think. 50 to 1,000 sounds like a lot more, which is a total, but just because the total is 20x doesn't necessarily means production needs to be 20x. For the space elevator parts I like to think in the parts/hour; 1,000 at 2/min is almost 9 hours but given all the unlocks, new parts, infrastructure and production lines required in tiers 3 & 4 I'd bet all I own you'd spend more than 9 hours doing it all so will have the 1,000 plates from it just running in the background. Don't get me wrong, you absolutely should scale up production just don't feel like you need to go OTT on production.

Cheers for input guys, yes space elevator stuff can tick along in background actually as you say, but I’ll need to work out how to scale the components anyhow as willl be needed for building. Guess just need a lot of space and large manifold fed systems from faster belts once I get steel up and running, and then take it from there.

Thats one of the places where running it on a dedicated server is so handy, it runs 24/7, so you just wake up in the morning and find out that its made 1000 parts overnight. The flip side is that it does negate some of the progression because I find that I dont necessarily need faster infrastructure because the gameworld is running while I'm not playing too, so the speed its doing stuff isnt important as a result.

I feel like the enjoyment of the game comes more from satisfying your own desire to make factories and make random stuff than simply from hitting delivery targets as quickly as possible. Take your time and smell the roses.
*sniff* *sniff*

All I ever get is the smell of smoke from my coal power plants, am I doing something wrong? :D

Today I have mostly been working on a crystal oscillator factory, I'll get around to doing the aesthetics later... honest...
