Satnav advice needed

I have a old tom tom one, and work has given me a garmin recently. I much prefer my old tom tom tbh, Everything is just where it should be, The garmin asks me for city then house number then street for example (if I don't have the post code) I know this sounds like a little thing..but It really annoys me lol.

Are you blind or something? Why do you need a large screen? You should only be glancing at it every now and then anyway.

I have to disagree - I have a HTC Desire and although its a fantastic handset I was very dissapointed with Google Satnav.

What didn't you like about it?

With the satelite mapping layer enabled it's very good and accurate too especially when you can see above where you are the buildings/roads etc itseld of just a tele-atlas map like on all other nav systems.

I've used it once and it let me down - it stopped updating the map and only provided voice guidance for about 60% of the trip. This was probably because the data connection or mobile signal was interupted but this only highlights the flaws in using a nav system which relies on having an active data connection in order to work.

The inability to cache maps ruins it.

I'm sure it is but I just cannot rely on a navigation system that might at any time stop functioning because it hasn't got a data connection. I only use navigation when I'm on long journeys and these invariably encompass parts of the trip where the phone signal is less than fantastic.

It's simply a major failing.

That and the voice system on it tries to be too clever - the text to speech thing is a good idea in theory but despite being able to say more its also considerably more irritating to listen to than the voice on a Tomtom or an integrated system.

Bigger screen means bigger touchscreen, brilliant for typing postcodes or addresses.

I vote for the Tomtom XL, I got a SH boxed one for 64.99

maps can be edited and uploaded by users, meaning map updates can be free.

Never had a problem with my normal tom tom, typing in post codes etc. The garmin is bigger screen... I just don't see the point and don't understand why you would pay extra for it, Totally refusing to even look at the normal size screen ones when your budget is average at best confuses me.

Satnav is so "meh", I've NEVER needed anything other than a map and a vague sense of direction. I Tried satnav before (tomtom) and it's just an irritating and mindless distraction.

I recommend a decent A-Z instead, much cheaper!

I have a TomTom One IQ and the only thing I don't like about it (apart from the flaky software in past versions) is the fact that the touch screen hit detection seems very hit and miss. My finger size and coordination are not the issue, as even when very careful, it dupes and misrecognises keystrokes.

I would have had a larger screen for this reason, if I didn't feel that the storage benefits of having a smaller one outweighed the issues.

I've been very happy with my tomtom one, I don't mount mine, I just leave it on the seat and listen to it
