Whats the deal on these? I *really* want a nice double din MP3 / Satnav headunit - but they generally tickle the £800+ mark!

Its all very well having the external unit but I would like something thats a little more integrated :)

I built a car PC once before, but I don't have the time this time around.

Has anyone got any experiece with the £500 blaupunkt rome navigation unit? I'm not fussed with a massive screen and whatnot, I don't want a motorised popout screen because it'll cover my heater vents.

What satnav headunits to people have here? are they worth it ?

i have the AVIC-X1R - and its one of those "tickle the £800+ mark!" ones. Its Single DIN (i looked high and low for double DIN - just could find it)

Technically its brilliant. I can navigate to italy, whilst playing a DVD film to the kids in the rear (requires kids & second screen :p ) and listen to Cds in the front - all simultaneoulsly (i bought a CD changer with it).

I can do a search for "manchester airport" and it'll find it and navigate there for me. On the journey i can search for local petrol stations, and incorporate it into my journey to the airport as a waypoint. Its brilliant. Except it isnt. A £150 tomtom does basic navigation and route finding equally as well without trying to screw me over as the Pioneer does on some of its route choices, plus you can add speed camera datapoints to the tomtom and not the AVIC. It doesnt play MP3 data discs as i'd hoped, and was led to believe, and the fans make a bit of noise too.

Do i regret purchasing it? nah, not at all - i paid £860 for it and the CD changer, its neat, and integrated ( No wires visible at all) and works well (with the niggles). It doesnt take any dashboard realestate up, and pipes the nav details through the car speakers which means i can have the stereo on as loud as i want and still hear mynav ditrections. It has some awesome features (including speed/GForce monitoring) and allows me to plug any AV source in. It had loads of mdules to add-on (reversing sensor/camera, bluetooth adapter, Ipod adapter) which all become integrated into the stereo.

So i'd reccomend it, but do get a bit narked when the nav tries to screw me over - it should be more accurate than a £150 tomtom...
