Hello all, you lovely people. Lovelies.

I need to get some bottles. Plastic would be ideal really for sauces (hot sauce and BBQ sauce) ideally in bulk too. Any idea where I could get these?

Merci

How many do you need? For squeezy bottles you might be best to just buy ketchup and things and then either use/empty them.

Not sure i've ever seen them to buy. Usually its just the kilner type bottles you see for sale.

Failing that. Ebay?

I made some bbq sauces recently - I put one lot in glass bottles with the Kilner style lids - got 500ml ones for about a quid each from a local home brewing place. Really looks good and easily cleanable.

I also got some plastic squeezable bottles with a nozzle and lid from ebay. Not so good as the plastic retains some of the smell of the previous sauce. Here:http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/NEW-6-x-C...ml-/221243828987?ssPageName=ADME:L:OC:GB:3160

So it's for resale, so I need them to be proper, and sealable. I would do glass but for hot sauce it has a tendancy to expand, so plastic stops smashing!

You'll want this type. Havent used that comapny. Can get them in different sizes.

You got your food preparation license?
Where you going to sell them.

Its something i looked into a while ago, still want to do it, but got to buy my own place first so i can make the kitched to code. After a phone call to the coucil food officer which issues the license, i would never get one for my rented house, but isnt particuly hard to get if you spend a small amount of money,

It might tun out to be cheaper to purchase actual bottles of sauce, tip out, wash, sanitise, etc. It was certainly cheaper to do that when purchasing bottles for homebrew - though we were sure to make good use of all the crappy beer once we were drunk enough to not be able to taste how bad it was :)

Those are great Glaucus. I'll see what they have on there. Would love some black ones if I can find them.

The food prep license is slightly different to the UK, but it's in hand either way. We will be a Swiss company, but the food will be prepared in France so we have to actually sell the produce from a French company to a Swiss one in order to sell there. It will also be available online too.

Well, starting that way Glac! Basel has no BBQ food, it's not really made it here yet, and the food offering isn't too great outside Swiss/ French/ German cuisine.

That said, do we know outside our expat+ group that there is a demand, or want for such foods?
Not really, no.

So the plan is to start small anyway, and I'd probably aim to kickstarter it. So I have a logo being made up, I'm looking at sourcing my chilies in big amounts from abroad (if anyone knows anyone) wholesale.

We want to conduct some market research so I am going to make up some ribs, pulled pork buns, chili and associated sauces and through the wife's old work (selling cakes) we know how to get a temp place in the market. We will go down there armed with free food, nice amount of branding and get some free business cards made up with our website on (which will contain kickstarter info & survey too) www.BBQninja.ch or www.theBBQninja.com

Our logo is being made as we speak by someone from people per hour site. I'll get a select number of t shirts made, hoodies (I'll give them to mates as well), as well as a limited run of sauces to start.

The aim would be to establish the demand as much as we can and get the name out there to drive interest in our kickstarter, without having to invest thousands ourselves.

The aim would be to hit 20k CHF or 14k I think it's about that GBP. Why? Well in Basel you need 20k initial capital to launch a business. Not in the bank, you can use it, but you need to come along with 20k.
The 20k would be used for that, but then to buy a trailer that you normally see, but kit it fully out and make it fully functional as well as the rest being used to set up the eshop and certain stock.

How are we going to get 20k? Well I haven't ironed out all of the offerings at the moment as this snowballed a little, but I'm thinking of doing certain levels with mix and match of things;

- 20CHF = Bottle of BBQ sauce & Bottle of Chili Sauce
- 30CHF = Tshirt & BBQ Sauce or Chili Sauce
- 50CHF = Chili sauce, BBQ Sauce AND chili sauce
That would be for produce, so that backers didn't NEED to be swiss / basel based.

The other offerings would be food based. So like a loyalty card, you get x number of meals for your backing.

I really want to do some "black" ninja cards, which are like credit cards with our logo embossed on it and the membership number, nothing else. These would be like a nandos black card giving you unlimited meals. They could only be got (for example) with the 1000CHF pack, which gives you all sauces and clothing as well as lifetime black card.

These are all initial thoughts mind, I need to get the calculator out and work out the costs once I've found suppliers for all the pieces in my spreadsheet. So it would start fairly small, if there is demand and we will see where it goes.
The beauty of the kickstarter is that if we don't reach funding there is only a small amount lost by me.

I'm starting another kickstarter as well soon, but that's a product design lol I've had a busy week... good job work has been quiet!

That sounds really interesting. I'd be happy to back any kickstarter with some funds :)

I'd love to hear about your recipes/give input too..if it's not a trade secret ;)

We need a good supplier of bloody soft dark brown sugar lol not to mention some other bits for rubs as well as sauce.

Once we're a bit further forward I'll be happy to detail a bit more. It might come to nothing, but the mrs is well up for it, so thought we would strike while we can.

So I found these guys:

http://www.justchillies.co.uk/ourchillies/

Inspired to try a few different sauces to make up. I'm going to try ordering 4Kg or a few of them and get some bottles and get making. This is going to need a gas mask. That way I can nail down the precise recipe for each and have a product example (at least one) of each one.

Ah, nice link. Let me know the price as I might buy some to go into a competing business...

Just kidding :p but I wouldn't mind making up a giant batch of hot sauce for myself to be honest.

edit: They need to learn how to deploy websites better. A hard link to localhost on a business site doesn't look great :p

Yea, I want to work out costs too, as my last batch used 25 chilies for 2 bottles. I'm unsure what the weight was though, which is why I'm going to have to do a batch and cost it up too.

Yea, I saw them but they didn't seem to have as many different ones to the above, unless I'm retarded (very possible).

Hell, if nothing comes of it, I'll have some decent hot sauce to keep me in stock and give for presents as well as some tshirts. I can knock up the site OK, the design work isn't costing much at all, so why not?
I'm putting together a spreadsheet for each aspect as well for breakdown of costs etc. It gets proper cold here in winter so a nice warming chili or sutin I can do in different heats ranges, and cook well ahead of time.

Gets spreadsheet head on.

I don't understand why your sauces are exploding glass bottles. It could be fermentation, which means you're not adding enough vinegar. Or are you heating them after sealing them ?

They're not mine that explode, they are other ones I have had. Regardless, plastic is easier to transport as it doesn't break and means more reasonable postage, which is a must from here.
