Just doing some reading about this country, the fact that women can't drive and the people are subject to persecution by religious police, and yet the U.S (Supposedly, the worlds leading democracy) is sending Many billions worth of weapons to this absolute dictatorship. Hypocrisy?

They aren't a threat to world peace, so there's no issue with selling them certain types of planes and other weapons. A strong SA is also a stabilising influence in the middle east.

Part of being a democratic state is about tolerance and respect for the sovereignty of other nations where they're not directly interfering with your citizens' wellbeing.

Hypocrisy? No, international politics. They can however be really difficult to tell apart some days...

That has nothing to so with why the US support what is in essence anathema to their own ideology. I'll give you a little hint....

OIL.

Of course, how did I miss that, the USA selling billions of dollars worth of previous generation fighter planes (F16) is all about oil.

Isn't that a global thing?

I lol'd:D

/end thread...its the only real reason why the Americans are there and why a lot of muslim countries have 'beef' with Saudi ie calling them the devils child of America etc etc lol.

But really its only Oil there that keeps the Americans there...the day the oil runs out then you can bet your bottom dollar/pound:p that the Americans wouldnt stick around for much longer.

lovely country SA, it used to be that i ( or any of my siblings ) where pretty much gaurunteed to be arrested if we set foot on Saudi soil, hell, didn't even want to over fly the country just in case the plane got diverted. :p

I loved the beginning of the old series of Have I Got News For You. When G Bush was in power and title credits came up at the beginning.

We are not in Saudi and we buy oil from them at exactly the same price as the Americetns pay.

As do the French. And the Germans. etc.

Meh,so if there was choice between Iran and SA for the USA (Forgetting all this Iran Nuclear war mongering business) then surely the USA would pick Iran for their superior (if not by very much) human rights.. As after all the Iranians have oil to right?

Seriously though, ultimately it is about oil supply.

A strong stable Saudi Arabia that is on good terms with Western Democracies means a nice stable and controllable oil supply.

Energy security is why the US and to some extent the EU do not comment on the more, shall we say, questionable aspects of Sharia Law and Saudi culture.

Iranian oil is priced in dollars as well, don't see them as the Americans best friend do you?

Iranians have consistently had an anti US stance since the revolution. The same is not true of Saudi Arabia. Its a relationship with mutual benefits. Saudi's want weapons from the west and we want their oil.

Does anyone actually know anything about American foreign policy? I mean in-depth and able to explain it in a way that answers the OP's question rather than just say, "OIL INNIT LULZ"?

I'm quite interested in this topic but know little about it (as do most previous posters, incidentally), so this would be welcomed :)
