any suggestions for some good free software to allow me to save some flash videos to my PC

each site is different so you won't find any generic tools as such. depending on how popular the site is, chances are someone has written a tool/script to do it. best thing to do is google the site name + video download.

Try flashget addon for firefox. Grabs from most sites using flash video.

turn on 'advance browser integration'. done.
