Saving an "opened" attachment

If I open an attachment by clicking "open" rather than saving the word document then opening it. If i make changes to it and save it. Where would it be kept and would it actually save the changes?

What application are you using, or is it web based? I would imagine I may not be saved or saved to a temp file. Typically however, if you open rather than save as, they you click save, it will ask you where to save it.

I've seen it saved back to the email before with no problems, but have also seen people lose hours of changes when saving back to the attachment.

Always save the document off, then edit it.

Well thats what i've told them but thought I would check in case one of your guys had a miracle up your sleeve.

Although my mate has told me that he was saving it as he went along and we can find the original one that was in the email but no updated version with any changes he made. Guess that will teach him.
