Hi, I'd appreciate some advice on saving emails.

I'll be leaving work shortly and would like to save some of my emails. What's the best way of going about this. Is it creating PST files, although I understand they won't open in Outlook Express, but only in main Outlook. Are there better ways of saving them so that they can be viewed using other programs? Thanks.

Legally you might not be allowed to Boboc without permission from your employer, check with them first or you could face a nasty court case if they find out.

You could simply export them from outlook as CSV files which can be imported easily into Outlook express, alternatively just export as a PST and use a convertor tool later to convert them into the format you want (Outlook express/Thunderbird). It's been a while since I did that but there are freeware tools that do it.

Thanks for your response. I take your legality point, although it is essentially for my personal emails.

You mention CSV format as well, although I thought that was more of a spreadsheet format? What are the pros and cons as to whether CSV or PST is the preferred method?

You could set up a second email account in Outlook and then copy your emails to that account via drag and drop. They would then be uploaded to the new account's servers.

^Might not be possible from behind a corporate firewall.

Just have a play around with the export functionality. Normally I tend to backup PST files though.

CSV can lose all attachments, but is easily opened on just about anything. PSTs keep attachments and can be converted later on fairly easily.

To be honest I'd stick with PSTs, just remember to limit them to less than 2Gb. It's been a while but I'm fairly sure that's the limit, go over that and it'll throw a wobbler, so split them up into smaller than 2Gb files if you have a lot!

I usually 'select' the email i want to save and drag and copy them to a folder on the desktop. Simples.

Personal Emails? in a work email address? be careful.

If they're sent during working time using your employers equipment, account and services you are in a very dodgy area.

Yep, work emails should not be used for personal use. Where I work we get people saying "oooo err eee I lost personal emails". They want us to retrieve their silly little holiday receipts that they accidently deleted e.t.c. Any personal emails is forbidden in most businesses anyway.
