Saving energy is flawed

e.g.

If I buy a more fuel efficient car I will save money. I will use that saved money to buy something, which indirectly involves the consumption of energy. If I save the money, it will be lent to someone else to buy something.

Same goes for saving powe by turning off lights, because i'm just going to use the saved money to go on a holiday to Florida.

It's imposible to stop this increasing consumption of energy in the capitalist system.

Who thinks the green movement is a total con?

Not me - I have learnt enough at school and uni about the environment. To sceptics: is it not better be safe than sorry? If it turns out all the scientists are being too pessimistic, then by using less energy, all we have done is reduce pollution, improve the environment and prolonged availability of fossil fuels. But if the scientists are right, we might just prevent global warming and whetever else it induces. Win-win situation really. I also don't think you saving pennies every day on reducing energy consumption will readily lead to a buying a holiday (£9 a year according to the energy saving website); it would take decades, so that's a bit far fetched.

No offence Sam but haven't you totally missed the point? I Think what hes suggesting is any energy (ie money) saved it just displaced elsewhere.

However, With the cost of anything energy related gonig UP any "saving" isn't actually putting any more money in anyones pockets. Therefore I don't believe it's a total con and it is worth making attempts to save energy.

How many active volcanos are there in the world and how much CO2 does this put into the atmosphere compared to what we do?

While I do recycle I feel that until China and the US get their selves under control everything I do is being cancelled out by them.

What's the point, when the UK is something like 1% of the total polluter, and saving a teeny bit...compared to China and India who belch out magnitudes higher. Then we get taxted dry for that tiny decrease in pollution (scam)

I recycle reguler but this is more down to my girlfriend and not me, i think it is a good idea i just dont like the arse ache of sorting my trash. other than that i think its pointless the little impact we do make is offset badly elsewere. But as usual our governmant cash's in on it and uses it to make silly amounts of money by causing almost histerical reactions from groups/individuals to propergate there bandwagon, if china and the usa pulled into line there wouldnt be a problem but as usual the U.K. mopping up everybodys crap and the citizens of this country pay the price.

doing things to reduce global warming is pointless and is nothing more than a tax scam.

However I do recycle and I would like to use energy efficient equipment. But that's to reduce pollution. Not to reduce co2.

I am energy efficient & resource efficient because i have to live on a few quid a week so it works well for me.
Having said that they can kiss my **** if they think i buy into there BS. Make shops turn all there display lights off, turn off 2 out of 3 lamp posts after mid night & make All public transport green, make Politicians use energy efficient motors instead of gas guzzling limos & then i may have another look.

i don't recycle, wasted energy (mine)! I also litter, as this saves filling up the landfill sites! I don't buy energy efficient light bulbs, the proper ones help warm up my room. I won't turn my thermostat down 1 degree, ill put it at what is comfortable. My tv stays on standby, walking to screen to push the button is a waste of my time. I drive with a lead foot and use petrol, its more fun!

I like my life, why should i change it for lower generations that are going to disgrace Britain even more than my generation has?

even if you changed your habits it wouldnt make any difference

Excellent, I'm happy for you. However, you a) don't know what future generations will be like so to state they will disgrace Britain is more than a little presumptious and b) you at least have options here, future generations may not have any options about how they proceed.

That isn't to say that I think that your habits make anything more than the most nominal impact on the World, I'm just pointing out that your rant seems mildly misdirected.

They need to look at public transport. I get the bus to work and when I started getting the bus two years ago it was £1.05. Now it is £1.90. How can they justify this increase, my wages have not increased nearly twice over since then. Might as well use the car for the inconvience and reliability of buses.

I could either waste £x's a year on electric/gas. Or save the money and waste it on something that will make me happy and possibly "help" the enviroment. To be fair the enviroment is screwed anyway if you believe half the things said so I'll just save money and buy ***

it will be the fuel prices (not that i agree with rises in public transport costs)

I went on a train from sandwich (kent) to liskeard (south cornwall) and i managed to pay £40 return however, some unlucky people paid £80 one way and had to stand all the way to plymouth which is atleast 3h maybe 3.5 hours down the line. I dont know how they get away with this..

Back on topic, if every one thinks i wont make a difference then nothing will change, however i do agree that untill USA and China/India change there is little (overall) we can do. However we have been poluting and revolsionising (spelling??) etc etc so why cant india and china etc do the same..... as for the USA there is no excuse

This is all my opinion and i know ppl wont agree and some may

Unfortunately it will only work if our planet works together. lol So no chance there!

Our world has enough resources for everyone to live a comfortable life, but that will never be spread across evenly because of the way our world works. Shame.

Do they tax CO2 emmitting cars in Africa? or every other country? (especially india with the mopeds and millions of old in efficient cars)
